Has anyone ever tried using felt as batting?

I have used both felt and fleece as batting. They have both worked for me. I just machine quilted them as I would any quilt. The fleece is very similar to a low loft poly batting and the felt has a little more body than a regular batting but I had no problems with it. I have also used old blankets, too. It really depends on what I am making though. I don't know if I would use it on anything very large.

Try it in a small doll quilt first and see how you like it.

I have never thought of that...what a good idea> Thanks!

Wouldn't it depend on the felt? What it is made of?

How does it hold up in the wash? I'm thinking it might shrink at a different rate than the cotton top and backing.

I'd think felt would wash apart.

I don't think felt will hold up long if it's washed. I wouldn't use it.

I would check it for bleeding color. Isn't felt made of wool? Might also check for shrinkage unless it is like a wall hanging and seldom washed.

Blessings,
Ruth

I thought felt was wool - washed and mushed about (technical term - lol)

Poly felt is just fibers pressed together. I think it would fall apart with use, washing, and abuse.

Wool felt is also not woven, but felt fibers have little "hooks" on them that attach to each other so felted wool is very stable. I think wool felt is extremely expensive, though.

I have never heard of using felt as a batting, probably because it would either ball up or separate (poly) or be outrageously expensive (wool).

I have never heard of it either but someone gave me alot and I didn't know what to do with it Maybe I will make dool clothes for my grandchildren with them or paper dolls (except will be felt dolls)lol

if you have felt give it to your church or make felt boards for the grandbabies to play with. they are always safe and fun for any age.

I have never heard of that. I don't think I would use it though.
