using flannel sheets instead of batting
 

What about using flannel sheets for batting? Since flannel sheets are on sale right now, I was
wondering if anyone uses them and what were the results.

I haven't used flannel sheets, but I have used regular flannel as batting. It was flannel that pilled after it was washed, so I didn't want it on the outside of the quilt. I've also used just 3 layers of flannel in rag quilts, so I suppose that's also using flannel as batting.

I have used used flannel sheets (well, that's a strange sentence!). I mean I have used flannel sheets that were previously used on my bed, so they had been washed many times. I haven't used new ones, but I see no reason it wouldn't work. I would give them a couple of hot wash/dry cycles first to get the possible shrinking wonkiness out.

My grandmother and great aunts used flannel instead of batting in all the wonderful quilts, which they hand pieced and hand quilted. I still the ones that they gave me and they are still going strong; although, the colors aren't quite as bright. They were made in the 30s.

I have read on here that some have used flannel. I think flannel sheets are the same, maybe even a bit heavier. I haven't used flannel sheets or flannel but, I wouldn't have a problem using them if I had some. Flannel of any kind would hold up just as well as any batting.

the nice thing about using flannel for batting is the quilting density does not really matter- you don't have to worry about quilting every 2-4" like some battings require- you can quilt around squares/blocks- or you can tie your quilt- flannel works well when you want a really 'flat' quilt- since there is no real 'loft' ... it adds weight, body & drape without loft.

I love backing the quilts with flannel, and would think of using the flannel as batting. I lucked out, and bought queen size sets at a thrift store that were new, and since they were having 1/2 off day, I paid $5 per set. The only caveat I have is flannel shrinks a lot, so I wash them, and dry them a couple of times before I use them.
