Is it ok under copyright laws to use a free pattern to make a quilt and then sell what you have made. I know you shouldn't do that without permission if it is published in a book or magazine. But I was wondering about the rules for free patterns.

Lots of times there is a note on the botom that tells you. Usually they say for yourself or gifts but not to sell but there is no general rule.

I don't think the selling of the quilt is a problem it is the selling of the pattern that is totally against the generosity of the pattern designer.

Ditto

I think you just should give credit to the designer. I agree, it's the pattern you can't sell.

I think if you list the pattern name and designer on the label to give them credit it would be alright.

If it's an original pattern you need the author's permission to sell.

It is always a good idea to read the whole pattern. Often the fine print at the bottom explains the author's position on this :D:D:D

If it is free and on Public domain I believe that there isn't a problem as noone owns the copyright any longer. As what others have said, check the pattern at the bottom for copyright info.

I try to give credit where credit is due. If it is a free pattern from a download, it's yours to make. But I would still list the creator of the pattern's name, or at least the issue and volume number of the magazine where you got it at.
