Using glue sticks

Are the cheap glue sticks suitable to use on seams ? I want to hold the seams together and sea over them . Have any of you fantastic ladies used these sticks to hold a seam and then sew please. .

I have used them... so, far, no problems. I used them last to baste my grandson's quilt. I would say try it... Faye

I always buy my glue sticks at the dollar store- often can find a 4-pack for $1; can't beat that'! they work just fine.

dunster 10-29-2013 03:41 AM

Make sure they're washable.

mighty 10-29-2013 07:10 AM

I use washable and they work great!

PaperPrincess 10-29-2013 09:33 AM

Just do a quick test to make sure they wash out. Stick together a couple scraps, sew your seam and then throw it in the laundry.

I use glue sticks for basting down the binding before machine sewing. They are not near as messy as liquid glue and hold just as well after drying with iron. I buy the cheaper brand wherever I can find them ....CrazyArt, I think is the brand. That brand washes out just as easily as Elmers in a warm water wash with detergent. I have never used for seams, but am sure they will work fine.

I was given a tube of Lapel washable glue from a tailor at men's store. It's the best temp glue stick I have used. Fabric sticks together immediately and holds. No heat needed. It's available online.

Yes, I have - you should have no problem as long as the glue is washable. Also, make sure to wash the glue out of the quilt after it is quilted and bound

If you have doubts about the 'wash-out-ability', use the glue on some scraps and make a place mat. Then wash it in the washing machine with a load of clothes. I suggest washing with a load of clothes so that you kind of simulate the experience of washing an entire quilt.

I have used cheap glue sticks when making garments, and they worked fine and washed out completely. I'm glad, because I stocked up during the back to school sales when they were 10 cents each! I was able to sew over the glue with no problems, even in a couple places where I gobbed it on rather thick.

...and I presume don't have to wash out as it is temp?

BellaBoo 10-31-2013 05:02 AM

It holds until washed out, like Elmer's School glue.

I used up some glue sticks that I had on hand recently after checking that they were washable. I had read on QB about glue basting but had never tried it before. I did not have any Elmer's glue so thought I would try the sticks. So easy to use, no mess but used quite a bit of glue. Will definitely do this again.

I don't use the glue sticks but Elmer's Glue on blocks that I need to be precise with matching. As my quilts will get washed before I give them away, I know the glue will be gone. Since finding out about using glue in my sewing, I use it every chance I can in lieu of pins. Glue is easier to get out than blood............:-)

Glue sticks I bought from the dollar tree just did not work. I find that Elmers washable liquid glue is my choice to do any kind of basting.

I buy whatever glue stick that's cheapest. I read somewhere that you should store them in a zip loc bag in refrigerator to keep them fresh. That's what I do and they don't dry out before I can use them all.

I have never used glue while sewing. Looks like I am a minority though. Good luck. Let us know how it works for you.

IBQUILTIN 10-31-2013 12:30 PM

They work great, but be sure they are WASHABLE glue

pennylynne 10-31-2013 03:09 PM

I shop every year at Walmart during the back to school time and get glue sticks at ten for a dollar. This is the Elmer's washable glue. I then store them in the refrigerator so they don't dry out. They work great, are cheap to use, and washes out with no problems.

Missouri Star has lapel sticks.

I have found the best glue stick.....It is made by Elmer's and the color is "PURPLE" soluble. Works great....JoAnn's carry it.....I will never buy a different glue stick.:)

donna13350 10-31-2013 06:34 PM

I use them a lot! As long as label says washable..they should be fine..I have a fridge full of them! I just used them for lining up 9 patch rows..I have never, ever gotten such precise seams before with any other method! I glued, lined them up, then flipped the top fabric back to check..if seams weren't exactly right, the glue is "greasy" and you can easily slide the top fabric to the right or left, until it's perfect, then pinch it to set it, and sew away...easiest method I've ever used.

I use Elmer's white school glue. It is fabulous for getting "points' just right. If the kids can eat it, as they get in on their hands and lick it off; it can't hurt fabrics! LOL!!!

Folletta 11-01-2013 02:16 AM

no problem with glue stick... check only that it has to be "solvent free"!

I've had glue sticks in my refrigerator for a long time, but not in plastic bags.
They are now!<label for="rb_iconid_7">http://www.quiltingboard.com/images/icons/icon7.png</label>
