Oh now I am so confused, I am in the middle of making pot holders, with Christmas themed fabric, I am just checking, that I am doing it correctly. I have main colour (outside pretty), one batting (cotton), one insul (still not sure which way to put it) and one for the other side (plain) does the insul go shiny towards the plain, or shiny towards the pretty. sorry I am confused.

I have used the Insulbright with the additional layer of warm & natural as you mentioned. I like the thickness and it was suggested in a workshop.

I'm not sure that it matters anymore. Or maybe it depends on the product. The Insulbrite that I bought a long time ago said to put the shinier side towards the heat source, but the newer stuff( same brand) didn't specify and both sides looked the same. The older stuff you could definitely tell the difference. If you still have the instructions that came with it, check that. If it doesn't say, then I guess it doesn't matter.

This is how I make mine and they're fabulous. It's a pretty thick stack to sew through, but I glue the layers first (Elmer's) and use a walking foot and it works great. Makes for a nice thick potholder that stays thick after several trips through the wash. I love my homemade potholders!

I found one layer of Insulbrite was not enough, so I use two layers and it works out quite well. Adding other batting along with the 2 layers, just made the pot holder too think an cumbersome to use.

I have used worn out towels in my pot holders. Some commercially made pot holders are terry cloth.

I sandwhich insulbrite between cotton quilt batting then pretty cover on outside. DO NOT QUILT INSULBRITE. heat comes thru the holes. The binding holds the insulbrite in just fine.
