Using iron ons on a quilt
 

I found the coolest Bob Marley irons-ons on clearance. They are about 8x10 ,maybe 11x14, I have 8 in all. My son LOVES him. I would like to make him a quilt with them, but Im afraid they will come off. Maybe I could do a wall hanging, so it wouldnt have to be washed so much.

Has anyone used iron ons before on a quilt? Is there any way of making sure they stay?

This kid is never interested in my quilts, and he's all excited about this one. So, I'd really like to make doable!

Can you treat them like an appliqué? If you can stitch around them, they should stay on. What are they made of? If they are plastic that won't work. Good luck.

Don't see why not? Just treat it as if you are doing an applique and stitch around it.

What about ironing them on to a tee shirt first?

I did a sofa pillow with one and I sewed a trim around it to frame it and hold it down. I would think it would work on a quilt that way to.

if you can sew it, you can do it. Just give it a try and go from there.

if they are the same type of fusable transfers like on t=shirts you can add them to your quilt- you have to always make sure if it is laundered it is done so in cold water-gently- and air dryed- no heat- a wall hanging would not be an issue- but it is possible to use them on a quilt too....just apply them correctly-according to their instructions & treat them with care- shirts it is generally recommended to launder them inside out- that really isn't so easy with a quilt- but it could be folded with the decals folded toward the center then washed gently- or spot cleaned when needed.

I don't think sewing it will help, its like those real thin vinyl like stuff. The whole thing has the stuff on the back to make it stick. That's what concerns me, it can crack all over not just edges. Its made to iron on t-shirts, there's no fabric or thread on them. Ive seen t-shirts where they peel and crack all over. Maybe thats from the dryer?

Thanks for all the replies. I am going to do a wall hanging, I think. I actually found a Bob Marley applique pattern that I will do later for him a quilt.

He's helping me design it! That is such a huge deal to me. He's 17, and is never interested in my quilting. He's even drawing me a template for peace signs to applique! Who knew ole Bob could inspire this?LOL
