using iron on vinyl
 

I want to make a couple of placemats for a friend and thought about putting iron-on vinyl on them so they can be wiped clean. My question is, do I put the vinyl on before I bind them? Seems like that would be right or else the vinyl would not do nicely.

Has anyone else used the iron-on, and was it pretty easy to work with?

Yes, you would have to put the binding on after you covered with the vinyl.
However, wouldn't that somewhat defeat the wipe down purpose ... as the binding could get dirty?

If you are going to cover them with vinyl, you could just skip the binding.
The fabric will be sealed in the vinyl, so you won't have to worry about it fraying.

That being said ... with you mentioning binding, are you thinking of making quilted placemats?
If so, I don't think they would seal into the vinyl very well.
If you are thinking of doing this, be sure to try it with something smaller first and see how it goes.

I am pretty sure the iron on vinyl was designed for just putting a single piece of fabric into it and nothing else.

I don't care for how it looks...just wash the placemats. IMHO.

Just wash them, and scotchguard them after, if you are concerned about stains.

I never thought about the vinly not sealing good due to the quilting. I'll just leave it off because I want to quilt them.

Long ago I made placemats that could be easily wiped off. I didn't quilt them. I just cut themout with rounded corners. I bought some naugahyde from a specialty store - like for upholstery or car upholstery It was so long ago I don't remember where it was. These have lasted years. I can wash them if they get soaked, as with spilled milk. Life with children was much easier. BTW: the 'kids' are now 49 & 45.

I tried the iron-on vinyl a loooonnng time ago. And it fell apart when I washed it in the washer. I've decided I don't like the stuff.
