Using large spools?
 

So, my current quilt is eating thread. I went through an entire 1000m spool yesterday, and I am reordering, as I'm out!

Does anyone have an opinion to share about using a 5000m spool (I use Isacord)? The price per meter is SO much better, and since I am using up spools so quickly with this dense art quilt, it seems like a big savings. I know I will need a spool stand to sit next to my machine. It can't sit behind it, because, while this case is quilt as you go- and small, sometimes there will be a large quilt behind there. I have no experience with a thread stand- will it still feed as nicely once it goes through all the guides?

I'd appreciate all your opinions! I have a Bernina 430 if that makes a difference.

I use a thread stand a lot. The ones with a heavy metal bottom and a tall metal arm work very well. I also have used 5000m spools, and the thread stand is invaluable. It works fine in my Bernina 440, my Featherweights, and even my vintage Singer 99 hand cranks! I actually have 3of he stands because I generally keep 3 machines threaded up.

I cannot believe two 12" blocks used almost an entire spool of thread (it wasn't brand new...but was pretty full.)

I don't even use a thread stand. I just prop it up in front of my sewing machine and it sits there perfect. I found my sewing machine likes the big cones so much better than the small spools. I gave away my spool holders a few months ago when I thought I would never use them, so I don't feel right about buying anymore right now. But, so far, I don't need to.

A thread stand should work great as long as it is sturdy. I have one of those cool flower stands and it works great. I do shove a piece of scrap batting inside the cone and then over the post to keep it more stable as the thread unwinds. You don't want the cone to tip to one side or the thread comes off at an angle and not straight up off the cone. When the cone tips the tension on the thread changes. I like to piece mostly with a medium grey thread so I rarely need to change the cone. I also make about ten bobbins at a time for less interuption.

This stand is made for large cones. It is made to be efficient and to spool the thread with even tension.

Nancy Notions has it on sale. It's one of the best buys I've seen in awhile for this thread stand.

I bought a cheap plastic thread stand at Jo-Ann's for about $7.99. The weight of the cone seems to hold it in place just fine. Hasn't tipped over, yet!

Sewhappytoquilt, I just love the stand you made out of a mug tree. So clever!

I also bought an inexpensive thread stand at Jo-Ann's and used a coupon, liked it so much that when the notions were on sale-----bought 2 more and gave them away to my quilting buddies as grab bag goodies at one of our weekend quilting parties

I agree! I have that stand and it's wonderful. I actually have 2 of these, one I got from JHittle and the other from Superior threads. Superiors has the slight edge because it has thread holes in the side as well as the top. I would buy it from Nancy--same holder but on sale!

ARGH! Wish I had decided two days ago I needed one- I JUST placed an order from JHittle.

LOL! That's why I have 2--got the JHittle one first and then saw the one at Superior! I would have been fine had I not seen the video;)
