Using Metallic Thread?
I am trying to get a table topper done for Xmas, using metallic
thread. Right now I,m ready to ditch the whole project. My thread keeps breaking. I will get through a few rows, (I,m using lines and a walking foot) and it breaks. I have tried a 14, 16, metallic, and topstitch needles, per info I got on You tube. I lowered the tension and am not sewing too fast. I don't want to rip the stitches that I have done so far because I think it is going to look great, BUT, at this rate of starting and stoping, I won't be done by next Christmas. Oh and I forgot to mention, I,m using Superior thread, and putting the thread in a pail to get it straight. Is there anything more I can try? I will be grateful for any advice that I have not tried. If it is a bumpy metallic, you need a metallic or top stitch 90/14 needle. If it is a flat thread, it needs to feed in a vertical position so it doesn't twist. If the thread twist in the tension discs, it can break.

Go buy a metallic needle.

Have you tried lowering your tension on both the top and the bobbin--keeping them balanced of course. You can also check for burrs on your needle plate. Will your sewing machine sew with the same thread well with just a double layer of cotton?

When I bought my first metallic thread (Floriani) my LQS advised me to turn the spool upside down on my thread stand and I have never had a problem. It had something to do with how the way the metallic thread was made...... I don't know if that would work with Superior thread or not but it might be worth a try.

Try leaving the last guide before the needle unthreaded, sometimes this helps.

Use a metallica needle, lower tension and bypass the last guide. Also if it's a flat thread like Sliver, use a vertical thread post so the thread doesn't twist coming off the spool like it will with a horizontal thread post (or whatever it's called)
