Using mini charms

Those little 2 & 1/2 inch squares are so cute and a way to get the whole line of fabric for a little cost. Do you have any favorite patterns for small quilts or other projects that are made for the candy packs? If so, please share your ideas with us.

Have you looked on Moda Bake Shop site? They have so many cute ideas for all their precuts.

When I started my EPP scrappy Hexie quilt, I bought about a dozen of them!!!

QuiltnNan 08-24-2014 05:31 PM

i like the mini charms for a background to applique against.

I recently found a sale on these all Moda for $1.35 a pack. I don't plan on using them right away because I had an old wooden Coke A Cola crate. These little packs fit in the square compartments perfectly and make a great useful motivation decoration for my sewing room

I thought they were perfect for GFG also!

I saw those recently at the festival of quilts here in the UK. I was really tempted because they're so cute, but couldn't think of anything I'd use them for....but now you mention hexies I'm wishing I'd picked some up!

I have a friend who will eventually work on a larger quilt with these squares so she is constantly sewing them together in sets when she needs an ender.

I have a red/cream mini charm set started last autumn 2013 on a mini redwork sampler with these appliqued onto muslin. But the muslin is way too thin so left it for this year to think how to continue with this.Still thinking...

I sewed them into 4 patches using white then a small quilt. I donated them to a lady who makes baby bundles for the air force base near us. They go to the new Moms. I have had only one which was given to me. They are super cute.

I love them for my mini tumblers. Also hexies. Love mini charms and I am always on the lookout for them. They are hard to find them in my area.

i like to use them for trip around world mini runners

You should read through the 2.5" and 2" squares swap threads. We share a lot of patterns there...

Here is a quilt top, and some mug mats, that I made from squares I received in those swaps (2.5"). And this is another pattern I would like to try:

You can always buy a charm pack and cut it in quarters.... :)

That's true but where's the fun in that? Lol! Actually I specifically want the minis for my tumbler quilt that I want no repeating fabrics. Charm square would give me 4.
I need to find that swap you mentioned!

sandyfullmer 08-25-2014 07:39 AM

What a great bunch of ladies we have on here! So many ideas and places to look now. I really like the pattern on Craftsy that was mentioned, and am off to see if I can find the swaps on here for more ideas. Thank you everyone. One gone, where did you find them for $1.35? That's a steal!

Jenny Doan just had a tutorial on a table runner, from Kansas Troubles, that uses mini charms

lclang 08-26-2014 04:28 AM

Those 2 1/2 inch squares are kinda like buying scraps...If you are stuck on having a particular line of fabric I guess they would be okay, but if you have lots of scraps, why not cut your own and use them up?

misschris 08-26-2014 04:31 AM

I'm working on this one now....so easy.....

Sewbizgirl, I LOVE your quilt! I want to make one like this for my bed!
I'm planning to make a baby quilt with a few charm pack and use the coordinating mini charm to put prairie point on the border. Having all those 2.5 square already cut should speed up the process.

AZ Jane 08-26-2014 07:21 AM

2.5" squares are the perfect size for 1" hexies. Hexies are measured on the side, not across. (I now add that because for years I did not know).

fabric9patcher 08-26-2014 09:35 AM

where did you find the sale for your mini charms

MarleneC 08-26-2014 09:56 AM

I bought a mini tumbler template from Missouri Star Quilt Co and a candy pack but haven't done anything with it yet.

MarleneC 08-26-2014 10:00 AM

Sewbizgirl--love the quilt---and the mug mats are a great way to use those tiny squares.

RAChhap 08-26-2014 11:19 AM

Missouri Star has a video tutorial for a Christmas table runner using them. I did one , from start to ready to hand stitch the binding on in less than an afternoon.
