I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on using old sheets to make a quilt?
I have a collection from my family and would like to incorporate them into a design.

Tasha....sounds like a great idea. Do these have patterns or are they specially edged? there are as many options as there are quilt blocks. If there are special features you want to highlight Then build your design off of them... You may want to check through the search and see if any of the Hankie or Memory quilts give you ideas as well. As for the sheets themselves...they are fabric....treat them as such.

The only pro blem I have found is hand quilting , trouble with the needle going through. They need to be machine quilted or tied.

Hi Tasha....I have a friend who collects sheets for me to use on the back of quilts. Just make sure the material is good and not 'worn thin". I machine quilt and love having the large sizes of sheets to use. I often am given sheets with pretty patterns printed on them. They look great for the backing!

If you can find some people who collect items for charity (clothing, kids stuffetc) they likely will also know someone who can get you sheets. I have also heard of contacting motels and hotels for their used sheets...

I have used old cotton sheets that still have wear in them, no problems at all. The polyester blends don't work as well for me on large quilts. Even machine quilting they tend to slide but the cotton are wonderful.

My church tends to use the older ploy blend sheets for costumes, on the backs of banners, or as table cloths for our eat & sing evenings. The resist stains and work well for the tables.

I like the cotton sheets for sewing, they don't slip around as much. I use the polyester sheets for 'mock dresses' while fitting a pattern. I will cut a bodice out of old sheeting and then fit it to the person, even write on it! I've used sheets for baby quilts, linings for curtains, you name it. Enjoy!
