Somewhere I saw how to use the top layer of paper nakinks to make a patchwork block and I can't find it now. Can anyone tell me how to do it. I think it was in an Australian Patchwork Magazine or Patwork and Craft magazine

Welcome to the board from Southern California!
Don't think I have seen that. Maybe someone else on here has! |
I have seen them Modge Podged to an art quilt top. Also them being used as a quilting stencil and then torn off later. :D:D:D

Was the napkin foundation for a string quilt? Those can be pieced on paper but its awfully hard to get the paper off, napkins might be easier.

Honestly, I can not comprehend how a paper napkin could work in any fashion for quilting. There would be nothing stable to use as a foundation. I envision the feed dogs shreading it to bits in the sewing process and leaving one nasty mess for you to clean up. Look at the problems that some have just joining two simple pieces of cotton without using a piece of scrap first. Imagine your needle not only eating your fabric, but now pounding in a layer of flimsy paper. Does it sound like I think this is a dumb idea? I hope so, because I believe it is.
Please post the article if you find it. Unless something has not been explained completely, IMHO, this would produce nothing but nightmares for you. :-) |
Just like there are different grades of TP and/or paper towels depending on price and brand, there seem to be different grades of paper used for different brands of paper napkins ...
I don't think I'd go out and buy new ones, but I might try with leftovers from a birthday party or something ..... I've never thought of using them for quilting projects .... but if you can use pages from a telephone book, I don't see much difference .... |

I used paper towels cut to the size I wanted as a foundation for string quilts & it worked out OK. And I've used used fabric softener sheets also. These worked well & I just left them on.
