Using polyester batting for first time...

I'm assuming that it won't shrink. Is this your opinion? I'm leaning on NOT prewashing before quilting. Is this correct? The package doesn't say anything except that it can be washed. Am I also correct in thinking that warm OR cold water is OK?
Thanks in advance from all you experts on this board.

In my experience 100% polyester batting won't shrink. The 80/20 combinations do shrink some but obviously less than 100% cotton. I would base the washing temp on the washing temp you feel comfortable with for the quilt. In my case, it would be cold water because I always wash my quilts in cold water.

Made over 200 quilts with it, never a problem.

lisa, i wash mine in cold water also, but this is a baby quilt going to a distant relative and who knows what it will be washed in! I always wash my fabric in warm water in the beginning just in case others wash the finished quilt in warm.
Thanks.

Thanks lynnie.

I've used polyester in several quilts. I've never prewashed it, and I've washed the finished quilt in cold and in warm water. It's worked out just fine.

I've never pre-washed a batt. Polyester batt should not shrink when the finished quilt is washed.

I've made dozens of quilts using Hobbs Polydown and it does not shrink. Some of my quilts have been washed every week for years and the batting has remained stable.

This is my experience as well with 100% poly.

I never wash batting, maybe I should have been doing it but have not. Since it is polyester I would think it would not be necessary since it does not shrink as cotton does. I am curious what replies you will get, maybe I have been doing it wrong? Good luck.

I have made about 105 quilts with poly batting ( High Loft), it will outlast the fabrics used. I like everything about it.
Only snobs have anything negative to say about it.

I never wash batting but do toss it in the dryer for a few minutes after I get it out of the package to make it easier to handle.

Iuse polyester batting only. No need to prewash. Makes a nice soft puffy finished top.
