What's your thoughts on using purchased binding or making a mock binding by turning the backing to the front?
If you don't secure the top edges of the mock binding you will have a sleeve for hanging. For some unknown reason, I have to make my own binding...I've yet to use purchased binding or have binding applied by a binding machine. I'm stuck on that ole "hard way or no way" of doing things. I have thought about the mock binding method....my Mom did all her quilts that way but then you don't have a double fold binding. How about making two fabric bindings for reversible quilts? http://www.needlepointers.com/displa...bbeginners.htm Here's one more link for machine applying bindings and a hanging sleeve at the same time. http://www.needlepointers.com/displa...om%2fbind2.htm |
I guess I am backwards as usual........LOL! I have always used bought binding and m about to embark on making my own.

I've always made my own binding. I've only done the mock binding once, didn't really care for it. But whatever works for you is best.

Always made my own except for the one time I wished I had!

I have twice done the mock binding. it is okay, but I prefer making my own from the material used to make the quilt. I like it to tie into the quilt. you have to do what you feel comfortable with, because you have to be proud of it. so if you like doing one way, let no one talk you out of it!!!

Hi,
In the forty+ years I've been quilting I have done it all. For my best work I make my own binding. For items like Linus quilts I usually do the pillowcase method and create a mock binding by stitching around the outside edge to create the impression of a binding. I use commercial binding when I want something unusual like gold lame'. I also use commercial binding on craft projects like purses etc. There is no right or wrong way. Do whatever suits the project and you. |
I did mock binding on my quilt "Butterflies at the Crossroad". I loved it. I think I'll do it again. and machine stitch through the edge to get the binding to fluff up a bit.

That looks good....good choice of colors as I like blue also....have any of you tried applying the binding and hanging sleeve together?

OH MAMAGUS!! How did I miss that quilt! It's beautiful!
I've used both ....made my own and store bought. Just use what ever I'm in the mood to use. |
