using rayon /poly blend
I have been gifted a gorgeous piece of a light sage green fabric that is about 5 yards long.The color is great for the back ground of a scrappy quilt I'm doing. Has anyone used a blend in quilting(besides ties)? I usually just stick to all cottons, but fingers are itching to use this one. any ideas will help.,also wondering will it hold up through the years.

Rayon can be pretty slippery to work with. I would cut a square piece and iron it on the same temperature you would iron the rest of your pieces. Check how it reacts and to see if it is still the same size after ironing. I had a big piece of rayon fabric that worked up really pretty in a clothesline basket if you find it can't be used in a quilt.

I don't care for rayon, but poly-cotton blends work well.

Only time I use any synthetics is in a crazy quilt for a wall hanging or small enough to be hand washed or in the machine on delicate.

Try cutting a measured sized square like 5 or 10 inches of the rayon and a 100% cotton fabric, then put them through a washing machine cycle (using a netted laundry bag), and a dryer cycle. When dry, press with an iron and then measure each for comparison of shrinkage. About the same? then go for using it in a quilt. Vastly different? Pass on the quilt idea and make a dress out of it instead.

I would be worried how it would wash, wear and hold up against the cotton fabrics in the quilt. If the whole quilt was made up of a poly/ rayon mix, then I think it would work just fine. I'm not too picky when it comes to poly/cotton blends but I would be hesitant to use a poly/rayon blend. But then again, our grandmothers used liturally anything in their quilts!
