What is it, and can it be used for quilting??

I don't think I've ever encountered the term "utility" fabric. The only one that I might consider to be "utility fabric" would be muslin. I'm interested to find out just what "utility fabric" is defined as. Thanks for the interesting post!

In the stores I shop in it is some vinyls burlap and outdoor fabric

I just googled "utility fabric" and what came up was fabric we'd use for home decor and such. Canvas, upholstery, drapery, even waterproof fabrics.

Would be good for backing if you'd like to make an outdoor quilt for a wee one. Or a floor quilt.

My DH was in the Marines. His work uniform was referred to as utilities. That's what I think of when I think of utility fabric.

I thought "utility fabric" or "utility quilts" were those that aren't quilting cottons. Like corduroy, denim, canvas, etc...

Years ago utility fabric was fabric with unknown content. It could contain any number of fibers but was usually not labeled. It was generally very inexpensive and usually on the "sale" table. It's been a long time since I've seen anything with that on the label.

When I asked at Joann Fabrics for the fabric used to cover an ironing board, I was told that it was with the 'utility fabrics'. But, I don't remember what other fabrics were with it.

When I worked at JoAnn fabrics, ulitity fabric was a generic title for all the ironing board, insulbrite, monk's cloth, canvas, drill and that sort of fabric that is used for things other than quilting or garments.
