A Very Different Stack and Whack
4 Attachment(s)
I started this project in a class several years ago and just found it while trying to get organized. It is a stack and whack that I have not ever seen on the board. I do not know the name of the pattern but it was quite interesting. Let me know your thoughts. The colors are not too accurate. I also need an opinion on the borders as I need to enlarge the quilt. I am going to use contrasting corner stones in the borders. Let me know what you think.
The lines look crooked but by a miracle, they are straight The colors are more accurate in this picture The print fabric in the border is a complimenting print of the triangle fabric |
That is really different, thanks for sharing. I haven't ever seen one done using that method.

It's called Ribbon Weave and it's in Bethany Reynolds' book Stack-n-whackipedia. I made one and posted it earlier this year - http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...e-t228720.html. They're fun to make - I love the one you made.

That is a cool one. I saw the top and immediately thought of a green border so as not to distract from the center.
Really pretty!
I've done this one too -- love your fabric -- what great variety! Great for using with flowers -- mine is Hawaiian flower print. This pattern is VERY fast and has no bias, so easy to keep everything squared. Glad you posted this!
Dunster yours is very pretty too, I must have missed when you posted it. I might have to try one of these.
I love what you have done, it is so pretty. I have never seen that pattern before it looks like it would be fun to do.
Very unusual quilt. I liked Dunster's so much I ordered the book the pattern is in.
If you are wanting the quilt larger, I would think about adding a dark green or one of the other darker colors in the quilt as a stopper border (1" or less), then add the 3 borders you are considering (making the print fabric wider), then go to a last border the same as whatever you chose for the stopper border. By adding so much light colors at the edge of the quilt, you may lose your impact for the gorgeous piecing you did in the center. This pattern is at the top of my to do list. I love the effect and not having to deal with bias edges is a big plus. |
I had never seen that done before. I'm amazed at the creativity of quilters to put a different spin on an established quilt pattern!!
I Love your quilt!! I have to try that!!
Wow! I thought I had made every combination :o)
I sometimes have a strip or two leftover, this is a great way to add some additional blocks in the border of any S&W quilt. Thanks for sharing! |
This is a very nice quilt. I have done lots of stack and whacks but not that one. I would put a dark border as someone mentioned to stop all that is going on in the middle then proceed to add other borders. What you have picked out for borders works well but a dark border maybe even after the light green and not before would work well I think. I would love to see the finished product.

Very pretty, no suggestions on the border.
What an attractive quilt. I might just try this method
Why thank you very much for sharing, its great.
I just had a thought about the border. I was trying to organize my spare room (which was overrun with fabric and I came across about 4 yards of the original fabric I used to do the stack and whack squares. What if I was to use that in the border as my final strip? Just asking. Let me know if you need pictures. Thanks
Neat looking, and great job!
Interesting pattern.
I have never seen this but it is very interesting..Thanks for sharing...

I really like your quilt. It is a refreshing twist on the stack and whack idea. It is amazing how many of us missed it in Bethany Reynolds book. I went to find my book and sure enough-I had missed it. Since you want to enlarge it and since you found more fabric what about making some more squares to use in the enlargement? And, what about a narrow border of a solid or near solid fabric and use the original fabric for the final border? It would certainly create conversation as the viewers would enjoy trying how to figure out how you did it.
Very different and unique. Something I've never seen before- thanks for sharing.
I'm doing a similar quilt that is in an alexandersonquilts book. I'm anxious now that i see it, to get going gung-ho! For whom are you making yours ? A great fabric for a hunter/camper! Do you have a summer cottage? It looks great!!
very cool looking
Really unusual but I like it! I've never seen one done like this. Seems like it would be much faster to piece than the other kaleidoscope style stack and whacks. Great fabrics!

WOW! It looks like a Kaleidascope but without wedges. I love this. I'm gonna try one.

Twinkie: When you first asked for ideas about the border, my first thought was that (on my monitor) rusty brown. I really like the "frame" on quilts. Would love to see a picture of the "found" fabric, to see what it would look like. Such a pretty quilt, thanks for sharing your design decisions.
