Hi, I see some older messages about viking sapphire 830 and for all of you having trouble quilting, there was a defect where the thread hung up on the feed dogs when down..but it is fixable so take it back to where you got it. I now have a problem quilting when my top has fused material in it. It quilts fine on pieced tops but as soon as something is fused on the top, it shreads the thread and I can not quilt it. I have changed to a top stitch needle, changed the tension, changed thread etc. but nothing works. I pulled out my old singer machine and that quilts just fine on it so I know it is the machine. Anyone else experiencing this or have any suggestions? Thanks

I have the 870 and have no problems like that at all. I do know the Sapphire does not like Coats & Clark thread. It sews okay with C&C but makes a terrible noise, like telling me to stop using this thread. My dealer says they changed companies that winds the thread on the spool and a lot of people are complaining. These are all the new spools of C&C. Take your sapphire back to where you bought it tho, and they should be able to help you. It should still be in warranty, as they haven't been out on the market long.

I have what I consider a relatively new 870-Q. It has been nothing but problems....what you are describing is one of them. My dealer told me that "I sew too much". When I picked it up they accused me of wanting a machine that never needed servicing. Both are incorrect, however for $2500.00 I should be able to sew on just about anything, including fusible products.

My problems so far have been solved..the original problem with free motion quilting was caused by a bad adjustment in the feed dogs. the thread kept catching on it when they were down. The company finally figured it out. My second problem of quilting over fused material was solved by my buying a spring action quilting/darning foot. I had the regular one. And what a difference it makes. My machine now is making a terribly grinding noise but I don't think it does it only when I use coats and clark thread. I'll have to check that out. Hope this information will help you get your dealer to act on these problems.

I have the Sapphire 870 Q and it hates Coats & Clark. I sewed perfectly but made a terrible noise which scared me. Thought something was wrong somewhere in the machine. My dealer said that C&C changed companies that wind their thread & a lot of machines can't use it now. They are trying to get another distributor, at least this is the story my dealer said. I do know when I stopped using the C&C thread it sews perfectly & NO noise. So even tho I had several new spools of C&C I'll just save it for mending & doing hand work. About your spring free motion foot, I had one & took it back, but since then I've learned their is a command in the tool section to turn that on, which I hadn't, I think I just turned the free motion command on, which is probably why I had problems. Duh! You do think the spring foot is better than the open toe one? Glad your other problem is fixed.

I have the Sapphire 830 that I bought when it first came out. I spent so much on 1/4 inch feet trying to get it right.
Then I discoved it has a 1/4 in setting, duh. Now I just use the regular foot and adjust the needle for a scant.
I use coats thread and it works fine but dont buy it at Walmart.
I use the spring foot cause it is easy to see where to go.

I bought a Sapphire 850 in June. So far no problems.

My spring foot has an open toe, in fact, the opening is even larger than the regular quilt foot I had so I am very happy with it.
