Hi Ladies

I was reading the topic of the 301a Singer Sewing Machine and I thought this would be the good time to ask questions about my mother's old Singer.

I think my mother bought this machine before 1948 or around that time. I have it at my house but never looked at it. It hasn't been used in about 20 years.

I wonder if it would be worth restoring it or overhauling it? It is in a cabinet now. Would I be able to make it portable? The number on it isJB894668. I have all the attachments and the instruction book.

Can anyone give me their opinion on this?

Yes, most definitely use it. I love mine. I sews a much better seam than all my newer models put together. Get with Billy here on the board for info on cleaning, etc. Or, if you do not want to use it, I will PM you my address, LOL.

Forgot to mention, mine is in the exact same cabinet.

Local quilt shops or fabric stores usually know who repairs sewing machines, if you don't want to do it yourself.

My old Singer fits into the plastic case for my White sewing machine, so it can be carried around that way, but it is heavy!

You can look up the serial number on the Singer site and find out where it was built.

The JB series was made from 1936 to 1948, in the St. Johns factory. This according to www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company. Billy (lostn51) has posted wonderful cleaning and servicing instructions in the Vintage Machines section of this board. I followed his directions to service my 1925 model 127, and they worked great.

You are very lucky to have this machine. You should definitely use it.

USe a mild degreaser dish soap on the surface which looks like it is good condition

I have one just like this, even the cabinet is the same, and I love, love, love this machine. I do all my piecing on it, not the newer one because it sews such a beautiful seam. I wanted an older machine to do embroidery stitches for applique because I do not like the way my new brother machine does them. I hit all the thrift stores in my area yesterday, and YEA, I found a Singer 401A in beautiful cabinet for 47.00. Needless to say that machine has found her home with me, Is in her place in my studio awaiting a cleaning and oiling. Going to do that today, I can't wait to try her out. She seemed to work great when I plugged her in at the store.
