Virtual Quilting Weekend--2/7/21
Welcome to a special VQW. Several quilters asked me for a VQW on Super Bowl Sunday so here you go! I thought I would start it tonight in case anyone gets up super early to start quilting. My plans are to finish the sashiko class project from today's workshop. And maybe start quilting a charity quilt.
Can't wait to see what everyone else is working on. Remember, regular VQW will be next weekend--February 12-15. |
Raggiemom, there is already another VQW going for this week-end. But so you are not alone, I am cutting scraps trying to empty a large bin so I can stop tripping over it. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/boy.gif Making bricks 3.5 x 6.5 bricks and 2.5 squares for the Quilt Board's Birthday Swap for this year.
|
Good morning Raggiemom and all you other VQW'ers, it's been a while since I could jump in to say a few words. But today I'm working on mask for my oldest daughter, she is classified as an 'essential worker', she helps keep things moving. Our online orders. I am also working on an apron for a hometown friend that loves to cook. I really would like to make them one of those chef hats. I think that is what I will do today. I really don't do Football, but you all enjoy see you at the end of the day.
Happy sewing everyone--cherryb |
Thank you Raggiemom...yes a VQW was requested for those who don’t watch the game. I will find something to work on this afternoon in my sewing room (after I go snow shoeing with a small group of friends). Since I do like Tom Brady and look forward to the game,I have a binding project to work on during the game,
|
Thanks for hosting, Raggiemom! I’ll be working on the February quilt for the Debbie Brown QAL. I still need to finish cutting out my 2.5” squares and then it’s on to making the 16 patch blocks. I’m also trying to use up some crumbs, so may do a little bit of crumb piecing if I get tired of cutting and sewing 2.5” squares.
Can’t wait to see what everyone else is working on! Rob |
Still making HSTs. I should be a pro by now...LOL. Thought I had enough rows for this quilt but did the math wrong and need at least two more. So back to the jelly rolls and background fab and begin again. I really thought I'd be quilting a couple lap quilts but maybe not until next weekend. Ugh!
|
I will be binding a quilt and doing some hand quilting. I am not a football fan so I will be enjoying a quiet day doing hand work after I shovel my driveway one more time. I got my first Covid shot yesterday and have no issues except a sore arm just like after a flu shot. I wanted to share that for anyone who hasn't had the first shot yet.
|
I will be finishing a Ring of Wreaths quilt. Almost done quilting and ready to put the binding on. Those of you that enjoy football, enjoy the big game
|
Thanks for hosting Heather! I am continuing on with my Grassy Creek since I have not worked on it much at all this past week. I have one more row to go, but, I want to make this a King Size quilt for my bed, so I am mulling over adding additional blocks or spending the time to figure out a border. I can’t wait to see what everyone is working on!
|
I will be watching from the sidelines today. Our son is remodeling his kitchen and we are the "crew". Drywall mud is my medium for today.
|
Good cold (+5), snowy Super Bowl Sunday everyone. Thank-you for hosting this extra VQW.
Today I plan to finish quilting my “Chiefs”, quillow. It’s a row quilt with stripes of leftover scraps from another quilt I made years ago. I have this on my long arm and figured out my quilting pattern last night. I just need to put the pattern in my long arm and quilt it out. I will also be working on the pillow portion of the quillow. Then if I have time make two king size pillowcases from left over fabric. While I do that I will be printing out the Super bowl mystery quilt I signed up for. If I like it I will cut it out tomorrow and make over the next week. While watching the game I will pin rows together for 2 charity quilts that are 1/2 sewn. At 5PM it’s kick-off time and I’m glued to the game and eating -Izzy and chicken wings from Pizza Hut. |
Heading into my sewing room now. I think I’m going to pick out fabrics for the My Favorite Color is Moda quilt. It’s a BOM. I like that it turns into a queen sized quilt. Also kind of putsing around to see what I can dive into next. No plans other than sewing today.

Have my projects laid out to work on, in and around watching some of the game later. I want to finish the background quilting for my 2020 BOM from Sew Crazy, it is slow going as I am stopping to bury the threads at each appliqué. Then I have the February 2021 BOM from pumpkinpatchbc.com monkey fused and ready to stitch down. If I get the 1st project finished and off the table, then I will sandwich the little baby quilt top I made for a new gr. great niece!
|
Have a few projects going this weekend.
#1: Rebinding a twin sized quilt that needed a new binding #2: Finish sewing last 4 blocks for my "Party Poppers" quilt (Mystery Quilts Anonymous pattern) and sewing them into a top #3: Pining (pinning?) a small wall-hanging for a guild challenge and if I have time... #4 FMQ a miniature wall hanging Going to be a busy weekend (although I did start these on Friday). It is snowing up here, so I am hunkered down anyway. May as well be productive and "creative". Thanks for hosting.... |
Called my parent last night and while brain and mouth were busy - I squared about a million HSTs and am set to finish my LeMoyne blocks (Missouri Star pattern) today.
The recipient is coming for a visit at the end of the month and it was just the inspiration to get this UFO out of storage. I'd love to have the flimsy done to show. |
Again I may not finish this one as I have such a long way to go but to dedicate the day to just quilting and NO football is just up my alley. Today I will be working on blocks for a pineapple quilt. I will feel good if I get 10 blocks finished. I have completed 4 as of now and only 6 more for today. I am pluggin' away at them.
Thanks Raggiemom for hosting this weekend. Everyone stay safe today. |
I am working on putting the blocks together which were finally revealed for the Canadian Quilt Association Mystery Quilt that I've been doing the last 4 months. There are 29 blocks, which makes me think that the setting is going to be on point, unless they are going to do a traditional setting and use a block in each corner.
I have also begun quilting my commission quilt, which is a baby grand piano cover based on the Missouri Star pattern "Finish Line". This is my first commission and I've learned a few things, that's for sure! I also downloaded a UFO Chart here UFO Chart to keep track of my UFO's in style. Watson |
Oh gosh...is it that time already? I'm gonna have to pass on this one. I'm busy sewing leather couch cushions and have the machine set up for that right now. I'm here in spirit. I'll stop by and see what everyone is up to. Happy sewing!
|
Glad to see several have joined me. I finished my Celtic Sashiko class project today which was one of my goals. Then I spent some time looking up and printing off patterns for future sashiko :)
My other main accomplishment today was to get the taxes prepped. Now I need to do a couple household chores then we're going to watch Ironman. See you all back here next weekend! |
My goal is posting pictures. So far, I've posted an old picture on the fabric moretorium thread, resized it. Have pictures of the quilting project I'm working on and Cousin Dan got my computer working to do this. I'm stuck on getting pictures from camera to computer. Called him yesterday, he was busy, so I'm ready and will put in another call to him.
In the mean time, keep working on my wall hanging. |
Hi everyone! And thank you Heather for hosting.
Not going to have as much time today for quilting as I'd hoped, but I have finished my Penguins top and posted a photo of the result on the thread 2020 Penguins - Page 11 - Quiltingboard Forums Hope everyone is having fun, and I hope to be a bit more present next VQW https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png |

Well, I did get some sewing done today. I finished Clue #6 of the Cotton Cuts mystery and made some more Easy Breezy leader/ender blocks. Now I’m going to my comfy chair and work on some slow stitching.
|
thimblebug, those monkeys are too cute! And Sew Crazy is here in my hometown. Small world, huh? I helped Angie find the building she is in right now, it was formerly a home decor business and working out pretty well as a sewing shop. She didn't know it was available and she was about to lose the space she was renting at the time.
|
Oops....not Sew Crazy quilt shop....it was Sew Incredibly Crazy blog that ran the 2020 BOM, sorry about that!

I got some pillow fronts stencilled. I got 5 of these, as well as 2 other quotes. And I also got some cut out for more pillow fronts. Can't wait to see what you all have been sewing today. |

I got most of the quilting done on my Ring of Wreaths and the binding sewn on. Tomorrow I will do some meandering on the wreath part to finish it.

Love your pictures, everyone! Beautiful projects.
I surprised myself by getting my 'Get Outta Town' duffle bag finished. I promised to show pictures, so, in the nick of time, here they are. The last pic is the inside of the bag, with slip and mesh pockets. |
I pulled out a WIP - 6 place mats. I had four done and got another pieced. Spent much of the day getting 3 tops pinned together for quilting so I can work on them at our vacation home over the next few weeks. Can't wait to get them done and gifted. Thanks for VQW - it provided the momentum I needed.

Photos, maybe

So, my goal this weekend was, posting pictures. I think I've got it, here goes.
First attempt to decide how to layout printed panelsAttachment 631541 |

This picture is a quilt using techniques from Judy Hopkins, "One-of-a-Kind Quilts.Attachment 631543 I decided to use these techniques on my bird panels.

I rearranged the panels and started auditioning. There's square in a square, tri-rex and strips of fabrics. The second is a close up. Somewhere I decided the squares I'm using mimic some of the objects in the panels: flower=square in a square; feather eyes=tri-rex. Now back to thinking and designing. Attachment 631544 Attachment 631545 More later, can be found in fabric moretorium. These panels have been in my stash for 5+ years. All fabric is from stash.

Watson, looks like a good tracking device for your UFOs.
Thimblebug, love your pumpkin patch BOM. Looks like you have plenty to keep you busy. Anita, I admire how you have organized your projects and I hope you got a lot accomplished yesterday. |
I was a failure! I got my first Covid shot on Saturday and I was really tired on Sunday. I slept most of the day and I never do that. I have to say I had no unpleasant side affects...just couldn't stay awake! Lol Still have to bind that quilt and will do it today since it is snowing still!
|
I will not say the week-end was a bust but I did not get my bin of scraps emptied. Cut an amazing number of bricks and 2.5's squares but the bin of scraps is still half full. Grrrrrr. So, I will continue through the week pressing on to the goal of an empty big 'old bin. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png
|
I did good.

Well, I didn't quite achieve what I had hoped to achieve but I have a quilt coming together slowly and I will continue to work on it. I got 7 of the 10 blocks I had hoped to finish. The game didn't get in the way I just got tired and had to spend some time with DH. I finished one block this morning and getting ready to cut another. I always have ambitious goals with the VQW and only rarely achieve my goal. I just keep pluggin' along.
|
petthefabric- I like where you’re going with those panels. It’s fun seeing your design process.
I managed to finish cutting the 2.5” squares for the Feb quilt and got a few of the 16 patches stitched together yesterday. Will probably still be working on it during the regular VQW next week LOL! I enjoyed seeing pics and reading about what everyone is working on this weekend. See y’all next weekend. Thanks for hosting, Heather! Rob |
