I think JoAnns is great for quilting notions and batting. There frequent coupons help with the budget. As a rule, however, I shop at quilt shops. I find their fabric is a better quality and keeps the color better.

FABRIC QUALITY - same print, design, and name is sold at both LQS, online, and Joannes - difference is 2nds. I went to Hancock in Paducah and the fabric is top notch but the personnel is snooty. I didn't so much get a smile, howdy or whatever. I felt like I was interferring with there conversation. I do not buy from Hancock. Customer service representation of there company made me turn away from doing business. I know why WalMart has greeters.

I am fortunate enough to have a great LQS that I sew in every friday for Quilts of Valor. They have a fabulous 40% off room like none i have ever seen.. not filled with fabrics no one wanted to buy.. Joann brings in such amounts of fabric weekly that she is able to offer these fabulous fabrics for less the room is filled with about 200 bolts all the time and always changing ;) I also get 10% off in the store ;)>

I do however find fabric in other places.. I have people who know I sew and donate fabric to me.. if I can use I do if I cannot i pass it along to a local senior centre or thrift store. I have advertised on the local freecycle for some and also garage sales believe it or not I find brand new with price tags on :):). The yellow and black carpentar star I have been working on came entirely out of the sale room:)>

Since Joann's is 128 miles and most of the Walmart does not appeal to me, I have been doing a lot of shopping online. I find that I am very attracted to Kaufman. I love nearly everything they make. I have always been happy with them.

can someone suggest who are the best fabric makers to look for in fabrics for quilting?

Wal Mart or most JoAnns type fabric is OK for a quick nap or picnic quilt etc but I would not use it for anything you want to LAST.
Our Wal Marts here don't have fabric anymore, only some odd precuts -

JoAnns has SOME better quilting fabrics but you really need to check them closely. Some fabrics & fat 1/4s are ok but many are flimsy or poor print quality. If they feel stiff or sticky, they are just full of sizing and they are not going to quilt well or hold up to wear. You should look for a tight weave and a smooth "hand" to the fabric.

JoAnn's better fabrics are also as high $$ as quilt shops & online sources. Hancock's of Paducah (NOT Hancock fabric stores) and other web stores I use are often a better buy and ALWAYS better quality. :)
