I have an old model Bernette 50 sewing machine. I am new to quilting and need some info on where to get a darning foot or walking foot to machine quilt for this model. Also how to use them.

I know that at one time JoAnne's or Hancock Fabric carried the Bernette so you might check there or do a google search. I had heard that even though the name implies that it is Berninia it isn't backed by them but I can't say for sure if that was just one person's experience or the actual facts. The walking foot has to be put on right to work; which means that there is a lever on the side and it needs to be secured to the needle bar in order for it to work properly. There should be instructions with it as to how to put it on. Any time you are doing long seams rather it's making curtains or quilting the walking foot will help control both layers of fabric and keep them feeding thru at the same rate and will give you nicer seams. You can go to Leah Day's website and she has lots of free motion quilting that should help you. Check to see if you have any quilt shops in your area that do beginning sewing/quilting classes and those help alot as well. I took some as refresher courses after many years of not sewing. Good luck and continue to post questions that you need answers to on here. You'll get many responses and you can determine which ones work for your situation.

There are 'generif' feet which will fit, I bet. The walking foot and darning foot from my new Janome (2010) fit right on my old Elna (1966).
the walking foot has a big presser foot with a second (ridged) foot on top of it, which galumphs along up and down, in concert with the feed dogs below, moving the fabric along in time with the needle going up and down.
The darning foot has a little roundish foot with a spring on its shank, which gets the foot going up and down. You use that foot by setting your stitch length to zero and moving the fabric back and forth yourself - see Leah Day video!
Generally the ones I've seen - walking foot and darning foot - have a lever which you have to put on top of the needle-holder bar which has the needle screw in it. Be sure to screw in your needle very tight and be sure the lever isn't landing right on the screw, or you will find you get started and then ZAP your needle falls out.

Congratualations on the grandson. Grandchildren are such a joy.

With a walking foot you leave the feed dogs up. The purpose of the walking foot that both the top and bottom fabrics are now guided into the machine at an even rate. I've heard that generic feet don't last as long as the ones made for your machine but I'm sure as with everything that's not a hard fast rule. Good luck with your project. I really like Leah's site.
