What do you use for FMQ? I thought that you would have to have the walking foot to do the FMQ as well.

The first walking foot I had was a look-a-like for my machine and broke the second time I used it. It was also difficult to put on so.....I went ahead and bought the one made for my machine, Bernina 1530 and love it.

SandyMac 02-07-2011 07:59 AM

you will love a walking foot

FranGal 02-07-2011 08:02 AM

I have an OLD Viking sewing machine and need to get a walking foot. I checked the Viking web site and they do not go back that far. I messed up a nice baby quilt by the fabric not going through nicely. Any suggestions on where to get it? It is model 64 60 made around 1977. I love it and will not give it up, sewen many tent, jeans, and upholstery, as I raised 3 sons.

Debbie B 02-07-2011 08:04 AM

You do not use your walking foot for FMQ. You use a darning/ free motion foot to FMQ.

FranGal 02-07-2011 08:13 AM

Do you use the same walking foot for both old and newer Viking?

MS quilter 02-07-2011 08:14 AM

I would not own a machine that I could not use a walking foot on! One of the BEST inventions ever!~)

zoey 02-07-2011 08:42 AM

Get one they are great for doing layers and straight line stitching. And for any other kind of sewing of blocks that are thicker than normal like ragged edge blocks. You won't regret it.

jean knapp 02-07-2011 08:53 AM

never use mine. I have to adjust the tension too much. I just use the rgular foot and make the stitches length longer.

catrancher 02-07-2011 08:54 AM

Couldn't live without it.

vschieve 02-07-2011 08:54 AM

Jennifer,
That sounds like a cold hearted LQS and for now on would take my business elsewhere. I can't believe the lack of support here.

I have a Pfaff that has built in IDT, (Integrated Dual Feed) right there on the machine so it doesn't need a walking foot, but my older Pfaffs do require one. I bought the WF for the older Pfaff two years ago from a Pfaff dealer in Wisconsin. I talked to him and ordered it over the phone and he told me that many of them are plastic but the one he has for my Pfaff 262 was ALL metal. I had to raise the thread cutter on the back of the pressure bar before I could put the WF on but it works like a charm. I love it. You might give him a call to see if he has one for your particular make or go to his website and email him.

I used mine alot. I broke it yesterday so I need to go get another one. I still have one for my bigger machine but I used the one for my little brother to piece flannel and sew stretchy fabrics!

libber 02-07-2011 09:16 AM

I'm currently researching which one is the best quality to use on my FW and 201. www.april1930s.com has some very knowledgable information, also April seems to really know her stuff. I'm driving 400 miles to take an attachments course with her.

beverlyhull 02-07-2011 09:19 AM

Wouldn't be without mine. It is a necessaty when making quilts.
Spend the money.

I've been wondering if I could get one for my machine and how much they cost. Anyone know? I just found out I'm going to be a great Aunt 3 times over! So, I'll be doing blankets for a while outside of making one for my Gr8t GD! I'm so blessed!

You can get one at Keepsake Quilting for only $11.95. That's where I got mine. You will need a low shank size for the Brother.

Darlene, Thanks for the helpful info! Sure appreciate all the help here...BTW...Love you cute avitar, she's so sweet looking.

Thats so sweet of you to go to this trouble for another...kind hearts don't go un-noticed!

Linda Loo 02-07-2011 09:32 AM

Love mine! Couldn't quilt without it. I love the cuddle fabrics, and believe me I find it impossible to sew them without it. Try a new one if you're doesn't work  .

Jo Mama 02-07-2011 09:42 AM

They are great. I have one for my Bernina 440QE and have a built in one on my Pfaff 7550. Even feed will make joining layers together.

vschieve 02-07-2011 09:42 AM

Linda Loo,
I see you are in Round Rock. I am in So. Austin. I love Austin Sew and Vac south on Brodie; have lifetime membership to Embroidery and Sewing Club and Jennifer Clements is such a mentor for ALL sewing questions. I have never been to Round Rock store but south store has a really nice quilt fabric collection. Hear RR store has even bigger floor. I love this LQS.

Tamara
I have one for each of my machines and wouldn't be without them. I have an old singer machine and it's walking foot is not the open toe, so if you have a choice I'd say get the open toe walking foot. In other words the front part of the foot has more open space in the middle to see the stitches and your turning points easier. My old singer I use mainly for free motion quilting etc. Will try to find the open toe walking foot for my old singer someday.

Good Luck

Suzy

Can't beat it for keeping the layers sewing straight.

quiltqueen61 02-07-2011 10:22 AM

I also use my walking foot when attaching bindings and borders, I love mine, wouldn't be without it.

ajohn52 02-07-2011 10:27 AM

I would make sure to get the right walking foot for your machine. Get it from your make's dealer. When I first started quilting I didn't have one and the layered material didn't feed right so had all kinds of wrinkles. When using a walking foot it worked like a dream! I would not be without one.

Pennycola 02-07-2011 10:37 AM

I've got the walking foot but what stitch length am I supposed to be using? My stitches are really close together. Am I doing something wrong? I just started using it this past weekend. :?:

My time 02-07-2011 10:58 AM

Sorry to hear that because I have 3 for my various machines in different locations and they work great. You must have received a defective foot. Take it back!!They work great a layers of denim as well.

I tend to use a 3.0 length on my machine, but you should do some trials with scraps to see what you think looks best.

spindreams 02-07-2011 11:40 AM

I will never machine quilt without my walking foot. It also works well for piecing difficult fabric like Minkee. It keeps all the fabric layers sliding along evenly, no puckers or bunches to deal with, ever.
Try it, I think you will be amazed. Perhaps your sewing machine store will let you try it, and return it if you don't like it. I doubt you will return it!

MerryQuilter 02-07-2011 11:45 AM

I use it mostly for making chenille love it.

BettyGee 02-07-2011 11:50 AM

The walking foot was the best purchase I ever made. I have a Pfaff Varimatic 6085, yeah I know it's old. Absolutely love the walking foot. It is a tad tricky putting it on, but I bought a screwdriver from Clotilde, short stubby thing and it works wonders for attaching the foot. I tried something the other day without the foot and had to take out the seams because it shifted. Won't make that mistake again.

MerryQuilter 02-07-2011 11:50 AM

I use it mostly for making chenille love it. Also was about 90$ few years ago, is so easy to put on.

MommaDorian 02-07-2011 11:56 AM

I love mine. I've found I use it for more than I originally bought it for. I wouldn't have been able to do my Bow Tuck Tote without it, as well as my denim rag quilt.

elseebee 02-07-2011 11:58 AM

I LOVE my walking foot. My first machine when I started quilting didn't have one. Once I got one for my second Bernina, I can't imagine life without it. I'm still a novice quilter (can't FMQ yet), so it's vital that I be able to do straight line quilting on my machine. (use it for the binding, too)

misseva 02-07-2011 12:15 PM

LOVE MINE!!!

misseva 02-07-2011 12:15 PM

LOVE MINE!!! I piece with mine. It's a generic that I paid $24.95 for over 10 years ago to use on my little Kenmore. Works on my Brother and my old Singer.

So - out of everyone who's answered we have 2 that don't like a walking foot???

penski 02-07-2011 12:42 PM

they work great for putting a binding on !!

redeagle 02-07-2011 01:01 PM

Too bad Bernina attachments are not interchangeable. I paid $40. for a walking foot for my Bernina 1031 approx 20 yrs ago and that took my breath away. 10 yrs ago I paid $95. for a walking foot for my Bernina 180. That said, I would scrub floors if necessary in order to get the money to purchase a walking foot. That is how essential I find one.

IDquilter 02-07-2011 01:14 PM

I like mine, I have a Janome. I use it for attaching the binding, works great.

Thanks so much for the info. I'll give the website a browse and probably call. Appreciate the info.

DJ 02-07-2011 01:28 PM

I got one for DD's sewing machine. She said it was the wrong one and wouldn't work, so when I visited her, I showed her how to put it on. Now she won't sew without it!

Tamara 02-07-2011 01:38 PM

Thanks so much everyone...I'm going to town tomorrow morning so I will stop by my LQS to pick one up.
Again thank you ALL.
