Wall hanging batting

I'm making the "I love dirt" wall hanging for my grandson. It measures approximately 48 by 56 inches. Can anyone recommend what type of batting I should use for something that large? Should I use something thinner than batting?

I have several wall hangings about the size you are making and I used Warm and Natural. It's worked fine on all of mine. Hope this helps.

I've started using acrylic felt from the craft store for all my wall hangings - two layers if I want some "puff" to my quilting. It's washable, cheap, and holds up well. You can purchase it by the yard. I even sometimes use it as the "frame" around my wall hanging by appliqueing my front to the felt, leaving an edge around the center. You can't iron on top of the felt, however, since it could melt.

Thank you both for the suggestions!

I just use an 80/20 batting.

I just finished a Christmas tree skirt and used an old white flannel sheet for batting. I had a box of old white tablecloths and they make great batting for table runners too.

I use felt because I make large wall hangings and it keeps it's shape -- no ruffling around the edges. You can iron it but because it's probably polyester you can't use a very hot iron. Experiment on a scrap with your iron. I have never had a problem with it. You could also use a layer of wool batting next to your top and on top of the felt to add dimension to the quilting. I've done that and been happy with the result.
