Wall Hangings - How Big is Too Big

I have made many cute SMALL wall hangings, and have no fear about putting them all over my walls. But, I've heard that the weight of the fabric can stress the stitches over time, if it is too big. Is there a certain size at which I should stop hanging them up and they are now lap quilts?

I think if you make a good sturdy hanging sleeve that spans the entire width of the quilt you will be fine no matter how big you go. I have hung full size bed quilts and been to other quilters houses where they did the same. If you have an antique heirloom quilt that you are concerned about, you can always mount the entire quilt to a canvas and then hang it.

I have seen queen size quilts on permanent display.

Size makes more of a difference if the quilt is hung 24/7/365. If it's securely and evenly supported when hung, and given occasional time to rest off the wall, there should be no problem no matter how large it is. Even small wall quilts, if hung incorrectly, can stretch and distort.

The MSU Quilt Index has some great info on quilt care.

Applique may have some personal experience, too, from what her museum does.

There are some really lady wall hangings on sometimes really largo walls.... It all depends on how they are hung. Large, heavy wall hangings need good sturdy frames to hold and distribute the weight.

You should stop hanging them up when they're too big for the wall. That's the only rule I use.

LOL. Great answer. If it is supported well, seems like there shouldn't be a problem.

Hang the size that fits your wall space.

If the quilt's design is symmetrical, you could stitch hanging sleeves to two opposite sides so you can hang it from either side, distributing the stress to another part of the quilt.
