For over a year now we have watched the fabric depts leave our local Walmart stores. And we all complained and evidently some of us complained to the right people. In the rural areas where there are no big fabric stores like Joanns or Hancocks the Walmarts may be bringing it back. Our little local Walmart in Patrick Co, VA had a very small fabric dept so I had not been up there for probably a year and Sunday we were close and needed a bag of dog food. I thought I would 'cruise' through the fabrics just to see if they were still there. WOOOOOOW!!! After about an hour and 62 yards later I was going out with quilters cottons and the most expensive was $2.50 per yard. In addition they had already expanded the dept and was expanding it again. Killer nice cottons, upholstry and the slinky knit polyesters were gorgeous. The checkout girl said it would probably be a while before I would be back and 'hubby' just rolled his eyes  and smiled. I am in love again with Walmart. The fabric clerk said that Walmart had done some rethinking and if sales showed a need - which means if they sold enough and we raised enough cane they would keep the dept. Something worked somewhere because there are 3 Walmarts ( they are approximatly 60 miles apart ) that are currently expanding their fabric depts. They are also have specials like a BOM and the fabrics used in the example are on special sale. So everyone band together :XD: Raise your voices and let Walmart know that we need them. Esepecially in the rural areas. Personally if it wasn't for the fabric and the dog food I probably wouldn't go in a Walmart but now I am looking at it with a whole new respect.

That is fabulous to hear, they took it out in a 7 or 8 county area in West Tennessee.

dtippens 03-15-2011 05:22 PM

How lucky you are... We have Joanns and Hobby Lobby and they are much more expensive then Walmart. but we have no
fabric in our walmart.
I just despise going to walmart now.

CarrieAnne 03-15-2011 05:25 PM

Lucky you!

raedar63 03-15-2011 05:26 PM

I live in the boonies, no fabric stores for at least an hour one way drive. The walmart here went to precuts, and now they even cut the precut section in half!Cheapest is 7.00 a yard :(

tysinger 03-15-2011 05:26 PM

They took it out of one of our two walmarts and the one left is kind of small! But I will have to going looking I bought a lot from there for my sons baby blankets. Thank you for the reminder and I will start looking and buying!

That's great! Our fabric department has been reduced in size at least twice and according to the store, it will be removed next year. We shall see. Our fabrics have one up to $6 a yard. At that price, I can get it for less at Joann's with a coupon and have a better selection. I still browse when I go, but I don't buy much anymore. Actually, I don't recall seeing too many people buying fabric since they raised the prices. We have a Hobby Lobby almost across the street with a similar sized fabric department.

I am glad to hear they are bringing back fabric, though!

goosepoint 03-15-2011 05:49 PM

I have my fingers crossed for everyone. I 'raved' about my 'find' to my poor hubby until he went to sleep in the recliner. I think it is something wrong with us folks who get so excited over a little fabric. LOL!

cjomomma 03-15-2011 06:12 PM

That's great to hear. My WM still has fabric but they really need to expand because they are running out of space to put the bolts.

debbieumphress 03-15-2011 06:14 PM

Hope our little twon gets it back too. Ours only has packages and things. BUt the labels say Cranston???? We'll see. It's very affordable for my Project Linus quilts and I alsways feel the fabric I buy from them. Thanks for letting us know we have a possibility. HUGS

Lv2sew2011 03-15-2011 06:15 PM

Maybe if people keep complaining they will put fabric back in all there stores, cause like someone said the other fabric stores are way more expensive than walmart...

Sandee 03-15-2011 06:16 PM

Walmart's stock prices went down 7 of the last 8 quarters. I am convinced it happened when they started making quilters/sewers/crafts people mad by taking out the fabric depts & we retaliated by not shopping there any more. Why go there-the rest of what they sell can be bought at Target's & Mejer's. It took them 2 yrs to figure it out. We tryed to tell them with our letters, calls, & petitions. It took them 2 yrs to figure out the CUSTOMER is always right! Maybe we'll all get our fabric depts. back. We'll just have to wait & see how serious they are about keeping their customers happy. Then maybe if we boycott some of the other stores, they'll lower their prices to something more reasonable & absorb some of the cost of cotton themselves.

What part of Ohio

grammysews4u 03-15-2011 06:19 PM

ours too cjomomma ! they told me that even though they are brimming with fabric doesn't mean they wont close. dont know what they are thinking ,but they have got in some nice stuff.

Carron 03-15-2011 06:20 PM

You are a happy camper now!

MissM 03-15-2011 06:32 PM

I have 2 WM within 10 miles of me here in West TN and neither one has fabric. They don't even have FQs like some WMs do. When I was in KS visiting family I found out the WM there had a huge fabric section, and nice stuff too. Plus they were having a sale. :-D So you know what I did. Yep I bought 45 yards of fabric. My son said, "Mom that's half a football field!" :D Oh well what can I say. ;-)

SueDor 03-16-2011 02:19 AM

Thats really great!

QuiltswithConvicts 03-16-2011 04:00 AM

I recently noticed the expansion of our fabric department. Quite a bit of the new fabric is really nice quality, too. The new fabric is bring a new price with it, as well - $6.97/yard! Still less than LQS - which we don't have here in this town. I bought all the fabric to make a log cabin quilt for a workshop I was giving & I spent waaaay under $50.00 for everything. All Blacks & Whites with Reds, too, so they are paying attention to what is hot & what is not.

Now if we can get them to stop getting the same fabric that was there 9 years ago when they opened, we'd really be making progress!

sandybeach 03-16-2011 07:45 AM

We have no fabric shops within 90 miles of us except for the LQS. So our WalMart is now expanding their fabric department. When they remodeled the store a couple years ago, they shrank the fabric department considerably, but it is growing by leaps and bounds. They even had to remove the yarn section because they had so much fabric. Last weekend I went in and bought the material to make the latest quilt-of-the-month "Lilac Dance".

BellaBoo 03-16-2011 07:59 AM

If WalMart would contract for the best quality fabrics and Clover notions can you imagine how much the store would profit? Why can't any of the Walmart execs. know this? The fabric dept would outsell any other dept in the store.

melslove 03-16-2011 08:01 AM

our walmart went to precuts also last year, wished they would get the fabric dept. back. Its really looks like they sell a lot of fabric, the fat quarters are always wiped out when i go in and there is always new precuts, which means they must sell.

BellaBoo 03-16-2011 08:03 AM

I noticed the single fat quarters sold at our Walmart went up in price. Now they are $1.27 each.

Krystyna 03-16-2011 08:17 AM

The two Walmarts near us used to have very large fabric departments. They were considerably reduced, but I think that enough people complained and now they're back, although with not as much floor space as before.

The formerly large departments had a huge section with bargain fabrics - some as little as $1/yard! I really miss that, but if you dig a bit, you can still find fabric for $2.50/yd as mentioned.

I still chuckle over this, but at one point there was never anyone around to cut the fabric. One night there was a pile up of people waiting for over 40 minutes! I picked up the phone at the cutting table several times during this and asked them to send someone. Finally, I told them that we were all cutting our own fabric. Well, they showed up fast and in a panic!

A couple of weeks ago we were again faced with no one to cut. This time a nice lady from another department came by. She cut the fabric and pulled stickers out of a draw and just wrote the price per yard x yards. I returned a week later and no one was around, so I did it myself. (No I didn't give myself any bonus yardage!)

Still better than Joann, but I mostly use Joann for lace fabric. A good bargain when you have coupons.

EagarBeez 03-16-2011 08:34 AM

Our Walmart, condensed our fabric dept considerably. Last time I was in there, they had bins with $5.00 fabric, it was not cotton. Then they had tables with flannel. They had had precut, however, it was not selling at all! People that were there were complaining about the precuts. They had an aisle that they had widdened and they have a cutting area, with fabric bolts on both sides. Mainly childrens patterns. Where they had yarn all across the back, was almost empty, so was threads and a few other items. There was the choice between 2 sewing machines and 1 box. So, I don't know if they are moving it to make it bigger or getting rid of it. I have written and gotten same response from them, so I just don't go there anymore. It's a 45 min drive one way. I will make good with what I have now and the plans for such and get more fabric either when I visit the grandbabies or online. Walmart has lost my business...Have not been there in almost a year

quilt'nmomma 03-16-2011 08:48 AM

That's great. Are Walmart just took there's out. I got some great deals on fabrics at 50 and 75% off.

craftiladi 05-05-2011 05:31 AM

I am still counting my blessings that our walmart still has fabric...you really have to watch the sales because the good fabric goes quick....but yesterday all the easter fabric was marked down to .79 & .84 a yard...yep spent 22.00 for approx 29 yards...those prices are just unheard of...I was a happy sewer...lol
