Everyone My friend and I went to Walmart earlier this week, all of their fabric was 50% off! We got some fabric for $1.00 a yard! I paid no more than $2.50 for any of the fabric that I purchased. I came out with 7 walmart bags crammed full.

According to the local reps Walmart is doing away with all of their fabric notions. They're now going to call that area the Celebration Station. Something to do with all of your party needs, etc.

Anyway, not all WallyWorlds have fabric departments but there are 2 in this area of Virginia that did/do. Be prepared to be patient or help cut your own! LOL

BTW, the fabric was actually quite nice, not all but most of it was good quality fabric.

I purchased all of my fabric to create charity quilts for kids this next year.

Oh crap...the 2 of the Wally worlds that I shop in still have fabric. Since they are in some really rural areas and there are NO other fabric stores within miles, I was hoping they would keep selling fabric. I hate it when I'm wrong. :cry: :cry:

Not all Walmarts are getting rid of fabric, from what I was told. Some are keeping it, some aren't. Guess it's the luck of the draw as to which is which. But,,,,ALL 4 Walmarts in Hawaii BETTER have their fabric! I intend to do ALOT of shopping while I am there!!

It may only be Walmarts where there are tons of Quilt Shops or Fabric Stores. The 2 clerks that waited on us this week just said all Walmarts as far as they knew.

There are 4 WallyWorlds within a 30 minute drive of where I live! Now the one in Madison Heights, VA doesn't have their fabric on Sale at 50% off. SO it may only be certain WallyWorlds.

My Walmart is staying open as long as the sales stay high. A lot of the notins are no longer available....They do have sewing machines and some new ones are coming in right after xmas.

Earlier this week I found some nice xmas fabric that just came in...It was all quilt store value...only they are from abt 3 years ago. Our store has been getting a lot of fabric like this. I haven't been buying much fabric but I do buy 1/4 yrs of this nice stuff and put it in my plastic drawer thingeys. :D

They said ours wasn't closing either and when I went back two weeks later they was gone.

Two stores took them out but I hope the third keeps theirs. Funny thing it is the one by the fabric shops.

right near me they just opened a brand-new walmart super-duper store.
it' s the size of the entire atlantic ocean. but what they call the sewing section is one spool of thread and a packet of hand-sewing needles. so i would guess that sewing is no longer part of their plans for nj anyway. frankly without a sewing section all they are good for is causing traffic accidents because we have so many better discount stores for clothes and food.

The Walmart I go to has raised the prices on all fabric. They had a large table with all 1.00 fabric, first they raised it to 1.10 now it's 1.50 a yard.

Maybe they're phasing it out too, but I hope not. It's the only place I have to get fabric.

There was an article in our local newspaper that our Walmart was going to decide by January whether or not to keep the fabric section. I think I'll swing by tonight to check it out.

Generally with Walmarts....if they currently have fabric they will keep it until they schedule a remodel. Once the remodel comes, they'll get rid of it.

I think Walmart put a lot of these places out of business...and then forgot their customer base.

I only have one Walmart left that has fabric left And that is not much.

i think that a lot of fabric places, big and small, just can't compete with online stores. after all, online stores don't even need to be a store. they can just be a warehouse to reach hundreds of thousands of people. and who can compete with the selection? most of them do take back cut pieces, but you still pay for s + h. both ways. plus you don't get to feel the fabric. the big stores don't care about that. it's all bottom line. think about it: how many sewers are there in your immediate community? it's cheaper now to buy clothing made in china and tiawan (sp?) than to make it and proportionately few people quilt.

i hate online shopping and i hate joann's, but i buy online and only buy from joann's with a good coupon.

They are opening a super Wal-mart here and are getting rid of the fabric dept. And it is always busy. I was told they are getting rid of all fabric depts., but hope that is not true. Will have to see if there are any sales going on. Didn't see any the other day. May end up doing more shopping on line.

I have to shop on line for fabric and I don't like it much. I like to GO to the fabric store and feel and smell my way through it....AAAAHHHHH, now thats a good day!

When I first heard that Walmart was phasing out the fabric, I asked the girl at our local store. She said, "Oh, no, we aren't going to!" Of course, a year later the fabric was gone in this store. Then I heard when the store remodels, the fabric dept. goes. I won't be surprised in another year or 2 there will be no fabric in any Walmart. To bad. I buy a lot from there from the quilts I do for charity & other things.

Our local WalMart actually posted a letter that said their fabric department would not be closing. We have only the WalMart plus two quilt shops within 90 miles of here. And with the quilt shops asking $8+ a yd for their fabric, it makes it really hard to buy decent fabric at a decent price.

The town is working hard to get a Super WalMart in here. Supposedly they will break ground in January. I have mixed thoughts about that. It would be nice to give the local grocery stores some competition as they seem very high to me (Albertsons and Stater Brothers only). But since Mervyns closed, we have no other place to buy clothes except a small K-Mart.

I hope they have a gas station as we are still paying $2.19 a gallon. :evil:

I work for walmart and it is true that eventually they are phasing out the fabrics dept in all of them. Ours was phased out with our remodel. It doesnt' matter if you have a shop in town or not for the competition. In my town we have nothing but a walmart and krogers to shop and they still done away with it. So enjoy while you have it, I know we miss ours and get alot of complaints.

So far Phoenix still has fabric but they have started to change the name of the dept. so it wont be long.

walmart isn't as cheap on the food anymore either. when i shopped with my dd recently we found that the prices were the same as or more than our local supermarket. they seem to think that they can cruise on their reputation. too bad because in the meantime they are driving small businesses out. i hate to see empty stores on main street just because some greedy giant ran them off. and in this economy those stores will sty empty a long time.

MPeters is right. A mgr in a WV store told me their fabric would go when they remodel in the Spring.

One of our many stores in the Greater Cincinnati area told me they would lose fabrics once the store rebuilt so they could have a Super Center. The current store does not have enough floor space and the county health department will not allow them to bring "fresh foods" in the same dock area where everything else is brought in. So they will build - new and bigger!

I suggest you do a Google search. try "WalMart closing fabric departments" There is MUCH information there. Some 2 years old where they deny the rumor is true.

I found the petition which many of your probably signed. There are over 41,000 signatures to date. I suppose that number of customers does not mean a drop in the bucket for WalMart.

Oh my, it's so sad to think of losing our fabric dept. at Walmart. We still have ours in Washington, but who knows for how long. I guess I had better start stocking up my stash, before they are all gone!! :(

I love my walmart and I dread the loss of the fabric department! We live 25 miles away from the nearest Joanns, and I don't know WHERE the nearest quilt store it!

In terms of business practicality, it makes sense to close it. It's not just the sales but the fact that you need a worker dedicated to that department. They have to staff that one small area with people who know fabric and crafts and can cut the fabric (late at night, they sent over a guy from Automotive to cut for me once... he did his best.) So I hate to see it go, but I don't really blame them. Employees are very expensive.

They did our remodel on our Walmart this past spring and reduced the size of the fabric dept. but kept getting in new stuff. The last time I was in there, my friend who works the fabric dept said they were definitely going to phase out because its a service dept. and like you said Cathe, they feel its too expensive to man all the time. There was a manager standing around the area when she was telling me this, so I really made my point about what it would do to lose this dept. I could tell he was listening and my friend said quietly "thank you". I don't know if what I said will help, but I do not want to lose our dept there either. We do have a Joanns at the mall which is right down the road, but I like alot of options for the items that I sell at my craft shows and Walmart has those at a good price.

I talked with the Manager of our Wal-Mart, he said if everyone would call 1-800-walmart, and complaine.. it would help, he said to make sure and say, "If I drive to a mini mall to buy my Fabric at a Quilt shop, then I will be buying my groceries and laundry detergent, and getting my percriptions, at that store, I will not drive back to Wal-Mart to make my purchases", just think of how much money they will loose if they do away with all the Fabric's at every store. And now with the economy so bad, and they are putting in Party supplies !!!! We have one Walmart in a 60 mile radius, and the fabric is going.

I hope our local Walmart doesn't do away with the fabric dept....I go there to buy fabric but end up getting groceries, medicine, books, and electronics.

We have 2 Super WalMarts and 1 small Walmart in our area. The 2 Super have gotten rid of their fabric departments but the little one has TONS of fabric. Go figure.

I live in a very rural area, and hour from any other fabric stores, and our Walmart put all of their fabrics and notions by the yard on sale for 50% off earlier this month. Just went into my "local" walmart for the first time in a long, long time and they still have their fabric department. A friend needed more of a fabric she bought months and months ago and they still had that fabric and lots others. I never buy their fabrics any more, don't like them, but understand that for many it may be the only place to find fabrics.

Earlier this year our super walmart got rid of all their needlework supplies. DMC was .10 a skein - I bought $8. worth to back up what I had. My receipt was 4 feet long, lol.

Ours does have nice fabric, some of which I've seen at JoAnn's for double the price. They don't rotate regular stock much but do get a variety of seasonal. What's good about that is if you wait like a year to make something then run out you can always go back and replenish - I've had to do that too. I hope they don't get rid of it, quilt shop prices are a little high...

My WalMart has sewing machines....but no thread of any kind. :lol: Sheer brilliance.

We have a Super Center Walmart & they still have fabric. I like to buy their nicest fabric, as it is half the price of the quilt shops. I will be so sad if we lose the fabric department.

I have bought a few fabs from Wally but have stopped. Why? Almost all their fabric (at the one's here anyway) runs about $4.44 a yard. They do not EVER have sales or offer coupons for it. Yes, it is an every day low price but if I watch my sales and/or clip a coupon, I can get stuff from other sources (Joann's, Hancock's, Ben Franklin, LQS) at a lower price. I know I'm luck to have all these other sources and will continue to shop for the best value.

Shelly, lucky girl, you still have a Ben Franklin. Most of these stores have disappeared. I found one in a small town that was sharing space with a drug store. There were only a couple of shelves of fabric. Really sad. I remember when they used to have a really nice selection of fabrics, even though a lot of them were mill ends. Those were the days!!

Some of the Wal-Mart stores here have fabrics but will eventually close them as they remodel or build bigger stores. They have $1 yard and some at $2. then there are fabrics up to $4.89 or some odd price. I don't think they are consistent with pricing. But selections are not as good.

Enjoy those good buys as they are not going to be here for much longer. Why do things have to change so much?

Guess I should edit my previous post, went to one of the Walmarts today and only a little fabric was left. Big yellow signs said '50% off per yard' They are getting rid of their fabric department. I was at this Walmart just before Christmas and nothing said 'we're phasing out fabric'. Ribbon by the yard was also 50% off. They moved in more plastic plants and flowers. :roll:

I will be sad when they close the department... Walmart is just about the only place left to buy fabric that is made in America.

Cranston/VIP are great supporters of their military reservist employees and their families, so I try to buy that fabric first.

We still have fabric in our Walmart store but they are doing a remodel soon to a Super Store and then the fabric will be gone. It entails the service thing that some of you have already mentioned.
