My Walmart in Palm Coast, Fl. still has a fabric department and had the 5 yard bolts of fabric for $5. It wasn't 100% cotton, but there was still some really pretty fabric and for $1 per yard I can always find a use for it.

penski 07-17-2010 09:45 AM

hmmmmm i was at my walmart yesterday and i didnt see anything like that, i saw a lot for 2.44 a yard, where they in a special place?

littlesurfer 07-17-2010 10:06 AM

They were located in the aisle opposite the fabric dept.

garysgal 07-17-2010 10:20 AM

Here is something we could try but don't know if there are enough sewers/quilters to do it, or if it would even make an impact on Walmart.
on a certain day we all mail an empty envelope to the walmart head office and on the back of it write that this envelope represents a sewing customer that wants fabric back/stay at our local walmart. if it doesn't we won't shop there anymore.
or we could all call the home office on a certain day and that would crash their phone lines & get their attention (if enough called). we could all email on a certain day-again it would tie up their email dept & get their attention. I think that would work the best (save a stamp, be more convienent, etc).
but no matter what we chose to do, there has to be tons of us or I doubt they would pay any attention.

I'm on vacation and checked out the WM in Kingston, NY today. They still have a fabric department, but I couldn't find anything good on sale. Also browsed the local Michaels. They did have FQs and FQ bundles on sale that I liked. Good thing I paid attention at check-out thought. The bundles rang up at $6.99, not $3.49 as marked. They were nice enough about correcting it, but I hate having to be so vigilant.

penski 07-17-2010 10:39 AM

thank you i will check it out tonight

Granny B 07-17-2010 11:02 AM

They've taken all the fabric out of the WMs here. I called the 800 number and the customer service guy I spoke with said that if they got enough complaints they would consider reopening the departments. Yeah, right! They've probably already had a number of calls like mine.

fancifrock 07-17-2010 03:34 PM

Neither of the 2 WalMarts around here have any fabric.

squeakie 07-17-2010 07:02 PM

can't ever find anything special at our wally worlds around here either!!

garysgal 07-17-2010 08:33 PM

So, I went to our local walmart tonight and asked the lady in the fabric dept (that I have come to know well) about the $5 bolts of fabric and she said she has never heard of it and doesn't know why walmart would do something like that. I asked if it was possible that it was the walmarts that were closing the fabric dept and she said it might be, but that the head office told all of them that the fabric dept in this walmart was staying. I noticed lots of new bolts of fabric and they are now carrying pillowcase kits for $8.

BellaBoo 07-17-2010 08:55 PM

Went to one Walmart today that has fabric. No bins of bolts but a whole shelf of $1 per yard fabric. None I liked. I bought 11 yards of David's Textile fabric for $2.44 a yard. David's Textile fabric is pretty nice. It's better then the $4.44 per yard on the quilting wall. I posted before where I machine quilted one yard of this fabric together and toss it in the laundry with every load, even the bleach loads. it's been a few months and at least 25 washing and the fabric still looks great. No shredding at the stitch lines, no obvious wear. The color may not be as vivid but since I don't have any new I can't tell.

penski 07-18-2010 10:50 AM

i just got back from my walmart that has material and was told what used to be 1.00 yard fabric is now 2.00 yard and they have a small batch of 1.50 yard but as far as the 1.00 a yard on a 5 yard bolt she said she knew nothing about it

nursie76 07-18-2010 11:27 AM

Hmmmm...it does make you wonder how it is determined which stores that still carry fabric would have this. The lady at the cutting table of the first one I went to said that it was "something my manager is doing" so perhaps the managers were offered an opportunity to have this sale and some chose not to. I guess we will never know.

penski 07-18-2010 12:20 PM

i was thinking maybe they thought walmart customers from differant states wouldnt talk and my walmart that isnt having the sale would rather pocket the extra couple bucks back in the store than to let the customer have a great deal

garysgal 07-18-2010 12:26 PM

that's interesting because our walmart raised their fabric less than a dollar a yard. Maybe the managers get to fix the sales, I don't know. I just hope that what I was told (ours would keep their fabric) is true, but I wonder if maybe the sales people don't know what is going on either.

pennyswings 07-18-2010 04:03 PM

WTG on your find. So where are the pictures??

nursie76 07-18-2010 04:40 PM

My pics are on page 2, but I sure would like to see what the others have been lucky enough to snag...hint, hint...

moonrise 07-18-2010 08:19 PM

DH went to our Walmart last night, and they had the $5 bolts. Woo hoo! Some were rather beauty-challenged, but others were quite pretty. Everything said "unknown content", but he found some that we *think* are cotton.

He picked out 3 bolts for me, and I've got them washing as we speak. Two are pink floral, and the other is a light green floral.

He's going back after while to see if they've put some more out.

Even if I just use them for backing, it'll be much cheaper than their new "regular" price of $4.60-something to $4.90-something per yard.

Here's some photos DH snapped of the $5 bolts with his cell phone last night. I stayed at home instead of going to the store with him, but I shopped from his photos. LOL!

I got the green and the pink bolts

I didn't get any of these, but might tonight if they're still there.

I got the pink bolt (the one beside the gray bolt).

Our WM says they are not closing our Fabric Dept. That there would really be some mad people if they did. Maybe it has to do with where you live. We are in South Dakota, I noticed Montana is keeping theirs, wonder about Nebraska, ND, WY, Idaho, maybe Iowa of course Nebraska has Omaha, and Iowa has a couple of really large cities. Would be interesting to know if that has anything to do with it. Since we are kind of out in the boonies sometimes.

debbie1983 07-18-2010 10:12 PM

Yep WM will be going to all precut fabric--I called their 800#. We will only have Joanne's now. We got the $5 bolts this week--their plan is to add party supplies?? I use to work in their fabric dept. We have people coming from about a 200 mi. radius to buy because we are close to the CA border. Our next closest place is about 200 miles north to buy fabric. If enough people call i-800-WALMART they may change their minds.

zz-pd 07-18-2010 11:38 PM

WOW you are a very lucky lady. enjoy and God bless.

PS Stitcher 07-19-2010 06:13 AM

Our WM is closing its fabric section too. They have already taken it out except for FQ's which are terrible.

Surfergirl 07-19-2010 01:01 PM

I bought some of the 5 yd/$5 fabric at Walmart, but returned it because it didn't contain any cotton. I didn't inspect the fabric while in the store because I was in sort of a hurry, but after returning home and unwrapping it, I noticed it was very thin and some sort of polyester fabric. Our store didn't have any cotton. Would have been a great deal for 100% cotton, though.

tutty 07-19-2010 03:25 PM

I also noticed that a lot of the fabric that was labeled cotton was of unkown origin !!!! I did not buy any. I am disappointed though as well , useful for finding 100 % cotton in the actual dept for reasonable price for quickie children quilts that they drag around with them everywhere and get washed many many times !!!! :0)

jbud2 07-19-2010 03:27 PM

The stuff in the 'golden mile' Walmart in York county is sort of on the really cheap side. Very thin. Some was extra wide and there was a bolt of extra thick heavy stuff that felt like an animal hide. Ugly. The good stuff must have all been sold till I got there!

jacie 07-19-2010 03:28 PM

used to live in Kyle .S.D. on the rez.. our monthly trips to Rapids City were such a joy.. ... lucky you to have a wally world with fabs.......

nursie76 07-19-2010 03:36 PM

I am wondering...what is cotton of unknown origin. It is known that it is cotton, so is it the country of origin that is unknown? What are the options?

Debra Mc 07-19-2010 03:51 PM

I saw this last night. Some is nice prints Cotton/poly blend. some is pure crap & that is being nice. Didn't have time to look long Dh was waiting in truck. I bet this will be the fabric of the future for Walmart. I think they are mill ends. Not sure so don't quote me on it. Gonna look closer when I go back in a little while.

Debra Mc 07-19-2010 03:54 PM

Saw your pics. Your store got better stuff than mine. Last year they had a special fabric sale & it was all $1.00 a yard. Was out of town so I missed it but was told there was hundres of bolts of fabric & some really nice.

tutty 07-19-2010 06:08 PM

Looked like cotton, got to look again but it could read fabric of unknown origin. Which I guess could mean from a different country. I have found I cannot wear cotton from India or Malasia. Don't know why but cannot. I don't know if it is treated and dosent' wash out or what ! Just know I cannot where it. I also cannot wear polyester and other synthitics. so......

fuail 07-19-2010 07:07 PM

The one Wal-Mart local to me which has fabric just decreased their fabric dept. to about 1 aisle (!!) They still have some of their $1 stuff. Since we're near L.A. apparently someone goes and just picks up bolts of good fabric. I got silk, linen, and lots of cottons OK for quilting. BUT, we'll see, now that their space is much less...

debbie1983 07-19-2010 10:45 PM

When I worked in the fab dept we were told that all the $1 and $2 fab was unknown fab content-- guess legally there has too be something on the end of the bolt. My daughter is in management and apparently all stores with remodels coming up will lose their fabric and they will go to the $5 bolts. They were just putting ours out when I was there. We did have some pretty stuff, formal fabs and then some pretty UGLY, UGLY stuff. The also so had sweater fab.

debbie1983 07-19-2010 10:55 PM

ours is on the opposite side of the $1.50 and $2.00 fabs

fuail 07-20-2010 12:33 PM

I'm so sad that they are doing this!! The reason I got the silk and linens was it said "unknown content" but felt right. I wish they would keep the cheap stuff! I also make costumes and it helps a lot when I can spend $1 or $2 a yard when I need 8 yards!

debbie1983 07-21-2010 09:42 PM

I went to Wal-Martyesterdady and got some really rice fab on the $5 bolts--colored jean fab, suede brushed twill and aprint that feels like peach skin--all was 60" wide. The gal said they have 3 more pallets in the back. I went back tonight and about half was already gone. What's left is pretty thin and ugly!!
