I just came from my local WalMart in Everett, Washington. Was shocked to be told they are going to faze out all Fabric by March! and go to pre packaged YUK!! And she said All Our Walmarts. What happened I remember a post sometime ago about the Bigwigs of Wally World claiming they were Not going to Do this TO US!!!  BigWigs that is!!!!
Our local Wal-Mart phased out fabric over a year ago. I couldn't believe it.... but it happened. We do not have any pre-packaged fabric.... and a very small section of sewing notions. ;-(
Mine are doing it right now, and I am SO bummed!
Keep a close watch sometimes they discount alot of their fabric be 4 they close it out!!!!!!!!

Fabric was the only reason I went to Walmart. Now that they don't have it I don't have any reason to shop there.
We've got a few pre cuts - charms, jelly rolls, FQ's and some 1-2yrd pieces and bundles with a 2-4 1yrd coordinating pieces - nothing on bolts...notions are very slim pickings, and prices of fabric are too high. I have bought a few things since they phased out our fabric dept...I check every time I go in, and occasionally I see something that I just *need* to buy. It's pretty rare though.

the one I worked at got rid of there when they remodeled about 5 or 6 years ago. then everyone had to go to Orlando or Kiss. Everyone was upset,to many people sewed. I worked there for almost 12 years.
ALL GONE in Enid, Oklahoma, but Alva has it....
Spring Hill got rid of theirs but New Port Richey still has fabric---At least they did a week ago.
wonder if the prices will go up at other places once they have none...
The wal-mart in Bushnell Florida has the pre packaged stuff..which sucks nearest quilt shop is 15 miles away and isn't open very late or on the weekends..Joann's is i think almost 25 ish..
I don't shop at Wal-Mart anymore!!!

The WM in Myrtle Beach still has fabric - it does a booming business. The fabric is why I go there; when it's gone, well, I can get everything else WM has somewhere else. |
doing in in NJ too! bummer! They are going to loose A LOT of business.
Stopped going to Walmart when they did away with the fabric dept.
Our Walmart closed their fabric department 3 years ago and they closed another one that is about 40 miles away 2 years ago.
Our WM hasn't even gotten precut fabrics yet. Our LQS and JoAnn's prices are really high in this area, so I wait until there is a really good sale. |
I think we Girls should Boycott!!!Wally World!!! they would be surprised how much 'Wally' could lose!!!After all we girls do most of the shopping! And I mean all shopping!!
I agree! Without the fabrics, I usually only go to Wal-Mart when I can't find something anywhere else - now maybe once every 2-3 months! I do a LOT of fabric shopping online. I know sometimes you just want to touch it before you decide, but have found some good buys online & usually receive my orders very fast. We have a one true quilt shop left in town (fabrics are beautiful but quite expensive), a couple of sewing machine shops w/ some limited fabric & threads (again, expensive), Hobby Lobby (thank goodness) & a small JoAnn's on the other side of town. I hit Hobby Lobby or JoAnn's when I have a coupon or need something right away. Otherwise, it's online for me. Thankfully I have a pretty good stash & only have to shop to supplement it or for other sewing projects.

I was at a WM in Vegas over the weekend that got rid of their fabric dept. and went to packaged cuts about 1 1/2 years ago. Now all of their packaged cuts are in the clearance aisle. All other quilting and sewing supplies is gone. So makes me wonder if after a while everything will be gone in all stores.

huh our fabric is buying brand new fabric on bolts
sorry i meant our walmart is buying new fabric im tired not enough sleep
I wonder if it is because they know cotton prices are going to soar and they are afraid the price may drive people from buying. They are quite the business minded.
I was just at my not so local walmart, 1 hr drive one way, I noticed some of the food items have been lowered a little. Fabric dept we still have it is smaller, mainly kid fabric, they had a bottom shelf with marked down fabric. Thread was not refilled and did not have very many shades. I did not see any batting, when it looked like promise a few weeks back, it did not look that way when I was there. Still have someone in the dept to cut fabric. No cut pieces like some say so don't know which way they are going to go. I don't shop there anymore if I don't have to

The one in Norristown in PA got rid of their fabrics years ago.

Wally in Princeton WV has it but the one here in Pearisburg VA is supposed to be taking it out. Princeton manager told me if you complain and can get management to complain they will reconsider it and add it back into the remodel. Not sure how true but they do have current yardage and alot of A E Nathan and some nice cottons in their store. I do buy there myself at times for my charity quilts for they will have just the right piece at times. But most comes from LQS or my own shop.
Well here in tn were I live last year they closed too, and when they had the fabric in discount because of them closing that section in Jasper (two towns down from my town) I saw every one complaining about it so I decided to take advantage and did car washers at my husband's garage all summer and saved the money and opened a small fabric store in my town (took over my husband front lobby of the garage) and now for the past two months my business is growing. may be you all can do the same thing.
ther is no hope! they are doing it at almost all WM.
They have been threatening to close ours for years but so far it's still there. As a matter of fact they even expanded it a while back and added jelly rolls and fat quarters...although the quality of them kind of stinks so I hope that's not what I have to look forward to if they go prepackaged.
I know a lot of ladies though who either financially have no other option or because of location have no other option but to shop at Walmart and they will be really sad when it goes. :( |
Our WM still has fabric and is ordering more in better fabric a little higher in price but is worth it nice fabric. So far we still have ours here.
Our local Walmart (SC) has phased out all sewing supplies. They have turned the whole department into electronics.
After talking to the manager of the fabric dept in one of our local WMs, my understanding is that all of the fabric departments will be deleted. They are removing them as they remodel each store. I talked to her when they were getting rid of theirs a couple of years ago. Since then a new WM was built closer to where I am in Florida and they didn't put one in at all. Just a few threads, notions and yarns not even the precuts.
