I got a flyer from JoAnn's sometime in the last couple weeks, I think, not much in it for me. I was there today. I, too, thought there was alot of flannel, an odd item to have this time of year. Kind of made the rounds of fabrics shops today. Got a good chance to compare. Of course, I had to go to the big city 25 miles away. The privately owned shop was nice, but the fabric was very expensive for me, so I didn't buy much. While there, a regular customer came in, and the clerk was very helpful, had even set back some fabric she thought the customer would like. I live too far away to be a regular customer. JoAnn's and Hancock's both were very busy, but I thought Hancock's had a better selection to choose from. It's strange that the busiest departments are the fabric aisles, but the biggest departments are the home decorating, in both stores. Go figure. I also stopped at a WM superstore just to check it out, their fabric department is much bigger than our local one. This WM is right on the edge of the city, close to a large Amish community, so they may be keeping this one. I didn't have the opportunity to ask a clerk. The thing is, if our local WM gets rid of the fabric, I will no longer shop there, not because of a protest, but because the fabric is what draws me there in the first place. I usually buy other stuff in other departments, but with no fabric, no need to go. I can and do buy groceries, etc. at locally owned stores. Prices may be a little higher, but they give so much back to the community, donating food and other things to local events. When our local Explorer Scout troop wanted to have a fundraiser at the WM a few years back, they had to jump through hoops to get the o.k.
The bottom line, some of us like WM, some of us don't. We should all do what we're comfortable with, buy where we're treated right, and maybe agree to disagree.

I buy alot of my fabrics in walmart and joanns(just because I don't have much of a choice), but in both stores the shelves have been bare of cotton quilt fabric. All the employees in both places think that there has been a problem with production of these types of fabrics in the last few months. Our walmart finally started getting alot of bolts in the last couple of weeks, so they are getting better, but Joanns is really running low.
I think they kind of shot themselves in the foot when they thought everyone was making those fleece tie blankets, so that is where they invested their money. I've noticed its slowing down with fleece, so maybe we'll start seeing some cottons coming in.
Plus our Joanns just had a big sell on everything clearance. Everything was only a dollar a yard-it was only one day-boy did I clean up. Took several bolts home with me!!!!! But then again, I spend about $150-200 a week on fabric.

Boy, you're right about the fleece. I got so tired of all that fleece, having to wade thru those aisles to get to what I wanted. But maybe the good thing is that the fleece got more people in the stores, and helped them realize there's more to fabric than fleece! :-) Let's hope we see a return to cotton fabric.

Fleece and flannel everywhere and not an inch to stitch. LOL

maybe we're headed for a cold summer and the weatherfolks haven't bothered to let us in on the secret ...

let's hear from the conspiracy theorists ...

Aw come on now! You know darn well they have all that fleece for another purpose. Everyone has to make Linus blankets to keep the project moving. If you have not made yours, pitch in and buy some fleece. Hancock and JoAnn will love you for it.

For lazy people, do into Family Dollar and Dollar General and they will sell you Linus blankets already made up. What could be better? I think I saw some of them in Wal-Mart, come to think of it!!

Honestly, even going to the fabric store is no pleasure any more. It seems like they have everything except what you want. What ever happened to the customer's needs? They ignore mine, how about yours??

I left both stores last week and still had not opened my wallet. Maybe that is a good thing.

Maybe they all bought into the coming ice age being emminant rather than global warming. We are all so confused

Hello all. Since we have been chewing on Walmart on four or five different topics, I thought I'd jump in real fast. There was a petition that was just for our area containing 15,000 signatures turned in to the corporate Walmart. I called, emailed, sent in the proper form letter from customer service, and signed every petition I could think of. The fabric at our local Walmart is gone. It's been gone about a month. They are doing a large remodeling at the store starting in a couple weeks. After that they are supposed to have the prepackaged pieces in cuts of 1, 2 or 3 yards. The gal that used to cut fabric at our local store has retired and she said she saw the new stuff come in. Really awful quality. No more 1.00/yd. Also, very little selection. This should be interesting.

Here in Raleigh, we have two. One is slowly selling all of its stuff,at regular price, just not reordering. The clerk at the 2nd one said her store manager likes fabric and they have been ordering like crazy. Its not so much the fabric, but everything else that is higher everywhere else and the other store was emptying its shelves. We have Joannes and fabric stores, too, but not counting fabric, I've always gotten my batting and other notions at Wal Mart because they were so much cheaper. The fabrics is similar to Joannes, some good and some junk, but its "buyer beware" Read labels and feel.

if a WM fabric department has stopped getting new stuff, it means they are on the chopping block. if you haven't already developed a relationship with the women who work in that department, start now. they all sympathize with the customers and will let you know what they know as soon as they know it.

there are some fabrics at my local WM i really, really like and can't find anywhere else. they are already within my budget, so i am not waiting for them to go on sale when they start to close down. they'll be gone in minutes once they do go on sale. i'm buying as much as i can afford from each paycheck. when they do start selling off, if there's anything left when i get there from the higher priced stuff i still want, i'll raid my piggy bank and go as nuts as the supply permits.

i know many disagree, and it isn't true of every fabric there, but i think some of the stuff at WM is much nicer than you can get anywhere at any price. i may have to plan a trip to Raleigh. ;-)
