Our "super store" WalMart does not carry very much in fabrics anymore - some fat quarters but not much. Since they changed to a "super store" they have done away with 95% of their fabric dept. Fortunately we have a Fabricland here which is like your Joann's so I guess we are lucky to have it. They have a 1/2 price sale on everything in the store (for members) every couple of months so I stock up then. I envy those that have such a variety of stores to choose from but am grateful to have what we do have.

I love all these comments! When hubby and I got grocery shopping at Wal-Mart I always tell him "here's the list, I'm gonna go 'finger the fabric'. He just chuckles and starts the shopping. Wal-Mart is 30 miles from me. Joannes is 42 and Hobby Lobby is 100 (each way). I do like online shopping, but like a few of you it is hard to tell the "true" colors. I am always looking for inexpensive online fabric stores and would love to hear of some I could check out. I have gotten a few of the deal of the day fabrics from Missouri Quilts. Any other suggests for economical fabric shopping online?

Don't forget to check the fat quarters at Big Lots! They are $1.00 each and the same quality as JoAnn's. I often go in and get a handful for my stash!

Also "Tuesday Morning" has FQs in bundles and have seen lots of jelly rolls & kits there too, surprisingly decent quality and still cheap. Of course, you never know what they'll have but worth checking if you're in the area.

The one walmart that brought fabric has surprised me w/ some of their fabrics. I am finishing my 2nd quilt for someone primarily in walmart fabrics because that is what she could afford. They're pretty cute.

I don't like the quality of Joann's fat quarters. They are so thin. They aren't worth the $1.99 they charge. I can buy quality quilt shop fat quarters for that price.

Where ? When they are at regular price?

i was in the walmart in Lawerence Kansas....30 minutes West of Kansas City, today and they have the EXACT same fabrics that JoAnn carries. How do I know this.....last week, I needed several small 6 inch cuts of a lot of color family fabrics, pinks, blues, greens, yellows etc. and the bag was still in my van. I walked through walmart, saw the fabric dept and went out to my car and brought the JoAnns bag into the store....checked it at the service desk. The clerk in the fabric dept. could not beleive her eyes.....there was NO difference in the fabrics.....same color and pattern. Since the Joanns fabric was bought on sale ( 40% off ) that meant the Walmart fabric was cheaper in the long run!!!!!!

It's true if you haven't sewed for a while the prices have really gone up over the last few yrs. I can remember when I lived up N where the manufacturers used to be getting fabric for .25 or .50 yd. I know it was 20 yrs ago but we need to get fabric made in this country again and maybe it'll be more reasonable of course those prices are long gone. I think no matter where you buy from you have to like the feel of the fabric before you buy it because you won't be happy after you buy it. I was online at Joanne's today and came across some fabric that was actually made in USA and it was on sale for 5.39 yd. Sue

I'm in total agreement with Pat625. My favorite fabric manufacturer is Moda but I found what I consider one of the best quality fabrics I have, a black/white argyle looking print, at Walmart for $1.50 a yard.

I buy at Walmart, JoAnn's, Hancocks and Hobby Lobby. I buy fabric by the way ot "feels". I hope to go to Eleanor Burns quilt store soon!

Our local Walmart has finally gotten yardage back, they started selling the pre-packaged which was horrible. Hancock's does accept JoAnn's coupons, so that seems to be where I use them, but even there I can't always find what I'm looking for. The quality of the fabric is going down and the prices keep rising, I am an avid sewer and go through a lot of fabric, I need to purchase where I can afford. The LQS are great and have a huge selection but I can't afford $13 a yard when it takes 10 yds to make the front of the quilt then another 7 - 8 for the backing.

I shop at WalMart a lot -- groceries, Health & Beauty Aids, etc. Our local store just brought back fabrics a few months ago. And, they have some really beautiful fabrics. In fact, I saw some "copied" fabric at another business (won't name them) that was similar to some at WalMart, but it sure wasn't as good a quality as what was at WalMart. I think you have to "feel" your fabric and be satisfied on that score when you buy it. I recently bought fabric for a quilt (over a period of time) for a very large Log Cabin Quilt. Every piece of that fabric came from WalMart, and every piece was just as good as or superior to JoAnn's, and every piece of it was about half the price ofthe same fabric at JoAnn's. In this economic climate we find ourselves in, you buy what you can afford. It's not being "cheap" to shop for price, it's being smart. I would never buy "prepackaged" fabric. If you can't get your hands on it, you don't know whether it's really good fabric or a piece of junk! This quilt I bought fabric for, has thus far cost me $300+ in fabric, none of it being cheap. If JoAnn's is sellingthe same fabric as WalMart at twice what WalMart sells it for, somebody is really making a fortune! I am not intending to criticize anyone or any retailer. It's just my pocket thta determines what I can or cannot buy, as long as the quality is high! Opinions are like noses, everybody has one! IMHO!
