Want to Make a Bookcase Quilt...Need Advice
I have seen a number of very well done bookcase quilts, and I am thinking that I would like to make one.
My question is, are they fairly easy, or does it just seem that way? If you made one, did you have any major issues that I should know about before I dive in? I do not have an embroidery machine. Is there some other way that I could put some titles on the books? |
I started one but with the move to an apartment, it hasn't surface yet. I didn't like the way my plate (china) came out. There is some applique or at least with the pattern I bought.

Back eons ago when I made a wall hanging for a friend I used counted cross stitch for the spines, others have used embroidery and still others print on fabric.

A group of us made several. They were easy paper-pieced blocks so very quick to make if you know even remotely how to do that. Some of us just used permanent markers (pigma pens) to write on the spines of the books to give it some personalization. Of course you could hand stitch names if you would rather.

I saw one with attic windows on the lower shelf and it looked great.

When I made mine I did a few "custom" things to suit my Sister's life..... music notes for how many kids 4 and 2 grands .... her grand-kitty always playing in her plants ... photo transfer from their wedding..3 generation picture...family. She's a birder so had to have one of those.... It was a basic pattern that you can really have a lot of fun with. I did have some lettering on my sewing machine so used that for the book titles. If you want specific titles on the spines, then hand embroidery or fabric markers are probably your best solution. If you want miscellaneous writing, there are fabrics with text on them or you can use the printing from the selvages.

When I made a wallhanging, I looked up the books via google, printed the titles onto fabric and then attached them to the book spines

What a neat idea! I like how AUNTPIGGYLPN did those book titles. This may have to be a project in my future!
