Want to make placemats
 

I would like some advice on what batting to use for placemats and and what size is the best to make. I would like to do the sew and flip method. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

about 15x20 is normal as you will see. Have fun!

I made both of these using the sew and flip method. I used batting scraps but made sure they were low loft. I can't say if they were W&N or Hobbs 80/20 or another product. Measurements are given on the original post on this one:

My grandmother was a weaver. She made her place mats a bit larger than usual. I can no longer remember the size she made, but I remember her 'formula'.

She set the table, placed a plate, glass, napkin etc down on the table. Then she sat and checked if the placement of things was good. She wanted the glass to be on the place mat, and there to be room for a wider plate and place setting. I believe hers were at least 15 inches tall by 20 inches wide. Larger than usual, but they really worked well.

I like to use the 'wine glass' test. Would a delicate wine glass wobble? I find that in most placemats, centerpieces and table runners, I like to use flannel. It gives a tiny bit of cushion without any wobble. I am not usually a pre-washer, but, whenever I am going to include flannel in a project, I pre-wash everything.

I make a lot of place mats for our bazaar and usually use whatever batting I have handy. I very rarely use high loft so that is not a problem as I don't have any in the house. Most of those I make are 13X 18, but have made larger ones as it sort of depends on how much fabric you have to work with. They seem to prefer a set(4) for selling and that limits the size of the mat as I normally use scraps.

I usually use low loft poly batting on placemats and be sure to prewash fabric to minimize puckering after placemats are washed. Poly doesn’t shrink. I usually make them about 12x18 or so.

I experimented just last week with fusible fleece interfacing - I use the Pellon TP971. I ended up not really liking my design so turned it into a zipper pouch, but I think it works fine.
