Want to make sure I order the right clover bias maker...
 

I am very new to sewing/quilting, so please forgive my ignorance... I have only done binding once so far, for a baby quilt. It came out well, but it was only a single fold and this time I am trying a double fold. I am placing an order for some other things and thought I would toss in a bias tape maker.

I am a little confused about the clover bias maker sizes; even Clover's website doesn't seem to explain it. I searched the board already, and googled, and youtubed... I think what I have found is that the bias maker's marked size is about half the width of the fabric used.

Anyways, I made a changing pad a few days ago (sandwich of flannel, batting, and some laminated cotton) and now I need to put the binding on. I have already cut my fabric strips to 2.25" and joined them, then ironed them folded in half. I still need to do the other folds, but I am so very pregnant (due the 27th) and it was just killing my back. At this point I think I need to back off my quilting/sewing until after the baby is born... so I will just leave my project unfinished for a few weeks unless I get a burst of energy that doesn't end up channeled into last minute baby preparations.

Should I order the 1" bias maker??

I wouldn't because you've already done all the work. Just sew your binding to right side of quilt, turn to the back and hand stitch it in place. OR if you prefer - machine stitch it on. I like to make my bindings bigger than everyone else because it's easier to set it on and then wrap to the back. Just sayin'.

Most quilters bind the way you have already done it. I have Clover bias tape makers, but I never use them for binding; I use them with bias strips to make pliable stems for flower applique.

I bought the Bias Maker thinking I would need and use it. Big waste of money. I never use it unless I am garment making.

a clover bias maker makes bias tape to use for things like applique stems, stained glass applique- things you need bias strips for- to do a double fold binding just cut your strips- either straight cuts (for straight edges) or bias cuts for curved (scalloped-round corners) edges. piece the strips together with a diagonal seam to reduce bulk- fold in half wrong sides together and press- then line up the *2* raw edges with the edge of the quilt- stitch around the quilt- miter your corners if you are- then fold the folded (finished) edge to the other side of the quilt & hand stitch over the seam from stitching it to the other side (or some people choose to machine stitch both sides. a bias tape maker makes a totally different *fold* ...but fyi- the measurement is the *finished* size of the bias tape- so if you buy a 1/4" bias maker you cut your strips 3/4" wide- pull them through the tool while pressing- you have 1/4" bias tape - so if the web site says 1 3/4" bias maker- you would cut your strips much wider than that (like 3 1/2") the makers do come with instructions and tell you how wide to cut your strips.

Single fold and double fold are both only one layer of fabric thick. Single or double refers to one or two edges folded to the center. French fold is the binding that's folded in half and both raw edges are sewn to the quilt edge making it two layers thick on the edge of the quilt.

Don't get it. Mine was a waste of money. I prefer to do flange binding.

Sounds like you got some good advice here - I only use my bias tape maker for bias stems also. You've done all the steps to make your binding - now must sew it on. Let us know when your wonderful baby is born. You are in for a lifetime of love and adventure!
