I am machine quilting on a long arm my 3rd. quilt It is a jacobs ladder I made, the top is beautiful so I have been told. My oldest daughter has claimed it already.(maybe because her long time boyfriends name is jacob) My problem is my quilting skills are not all that good yet. So I have decided to take out all my stitches, I know what is involved because I did this years ago on my sisters Christmas quilt someone else(professional)quilted. But I am not one bit happy with my s.i.d. quilting.I do not have a ruler to go with the long arm yet can someone advise me on what kind to buy, needs to be simple to use.

I don't have a long arm so can't speak from experience. I do have a friend who quilts professionally and she charges extra to do stitch in the ditch! Apparently it is harder than free motion or pantographs.

i like using the Line Tamer for SITD

I use 1/4 inch plexiglas. Any thinner and it can get caught under the hopping foot. Hope you have an add-on platform to add stability for the ruler to rest on. If not, I say don't stitch in the ditch. It's so much more time consuming than other quilting I'd rather use the smaller machine with a walking foot.

Thank you for mentioning this ruler! I am not good at ruler work and just went to this person's website and she described exactly the problems I am having with rulers. I will be going to the MQX show in RI this week. I hope a vendor there may have this to try out. If not I may just spring for it. yes, a plexiglass 1/4 inch is easily and cheaply made by a glass company, have some circles also made, great for feathered wreaths. This is something I so wanted to learn and had these made for around $11, hmmm 6 yrs ago. The nice size for a hand held on is around 6"X 2.5".
Slow and steady wins the race. I use non stitch regulated, on a low speed, and you will learn to nicely move the ruler.
You need a larger base on your machine.
This is how I learned free hand.
