I wash my fabric before making a quilt for 3 reasons:
1. remove any sizing or treatment that the fabric may have 2. to make sure its colorfast( if it runs or bleeds or fades I want to know beforehand) 3. shrinkage |
I wash the finished project. I love the antique look

I wash before and after.

If I have a red or other dark colors, I always prewash and then will wash them all so they are all preshrunk the same....if all light colors, no prewashing, just wash when project is done

If I'm in a hurry, I don't pre-wash, but prefer it when the fabrics are washed beforehand. There are so many chemicals that are in the fabric, so if I don't pre-wash, I tend to get hives.

I always pre-wash. Then after the quilt is done I wash again. Recently I had a lot of new fabric that I washed before cutting (am I glad I did). One of the aqua cotton pieces bleed like crazy. It never would have entered my mind that this fabric would bleed. I have used this color before with no problems. Most of the other fabrics that were in the wash were not affected but one of the white pieces turned a light blue where the white was. I then put that piece in the wash again with my white clothes and Oxyclean and all the blue came out. I took the bleeder into the house and soaked it in hot water still bleed, I did this about three times and it continued to bleed. I then soaked in the hot water with Retayne and the bleeding stoped. I will always pre-wash. BrendaK

Pre-wash

I don't prewash fabric unless it is flannel. If you put this topic into the search feature you will get lots of opinions both ways.
