I have only found synthropol at a local quilt shop. You just use a cap full in a load of your fabric and it sets the dyes. I don't use any detergent. I use it for batiks and red and purple fabrics especially so they don't run on other fabrics after I have sewn a quilt together.

I'm a newbie. After reading this post, I washed my newly finished quilt. It feels and smells better. I would wash, especially for a small child.

i wash mine first

i like to use cotton batting, so i like to wash them up so they "wrinkle up" as my dgd says....plus if something goes awry i see it first & can fix it or dump it.

Like Kathy says, if there is a problem, I want to be the first to know. I also want to make sure that the markings I may have used washed out. I do NOT wash wall hangings B4 giving away. I also give the recipient washing instructions and a color catcher for their first wash.

I recently made a quilt for our new granddaughter and I washed it before giving because I used starch to help with the cutting.

I prewash most of my fabrics, especially darker colors. I had a bad experience with a red running onto a cream background when I was spritzing it with water to remove marks I had put on it with a disappearing quitling pen.) I don't wash before giving them away...just put them in the dryer on a fluff cycle just in case there is a stray cat hair attached.

I wash. My quilts are so 'old' by the time I finally get them done that I figure they are in need of a good washing!

I don't wash, there is no smoking or pets around my sewing. And after going through many laundry soaps trying to find one my son was not allergic to, and I want the gift to look new. God bless
