Washable bottom of tote
 

I'm making my own grocery totes. I like flat bottoms, but some patterns want to put cardboard in the bottom. I want them to be washable. Is there another washable alternative that will give me a sturdy bottom?

Yes, I use a cutting mat that is flexible and you can cover it with clear contact paper or use your cardboard and cover with fabric and then cover with clear contact paper. I also have use the white stuff with holes in it that is used for cross stitch. The cutting mat can be cut to the size you want.

i used plastic canvas. i cut one piece the size of the bottom. i cut a second piece a couple of rows wider. then i whip stitched the two longer sides together. this creates a 'D' shape when viewed from the end. it is very sturdy and is washable.

I have used leftover floor tiles they were self stick but I just left the paper on the baking. Easy to cut with scissors and removable to wipe down.

I buy food cutting mats at the dollar store. Pretty easy to cut them into the size you want. Depending on the store sometimes I pay a dollar for one and other times I can find them with 3 in a pack. Can't beat the price! I also use this if I need to cut a template.

I have used pieces of styrofoam, not too thick, but still sturdy, and very lightweight.

Oh my gosh. Thanks for all the responses! Sometimes I can't see the forest for the trees. The pattern calls for sewing the bottom into the tote. How about removable, Sharon, duh 😄 . Thanks again!

Great ideas. I think I am going to visit the local dollar store for these mats. I can see that they would be useful in several ways.

there is also a corrugated plastic. They are used in campaign signs, but be careful as some places you are not allowed to take those even after the election. I have found plain ones in the 'for sale' sign area of Home Depot. I have covered mine in fabric, but can remove to rinse or wash as needed. they can be cut with a craft knife.
