Washable graphite pencil not washing out - update!
2 Attachment(s)
Thanks to everyone for the good suggestions and the support. I did everything suggested and ordered the marking pencil remover. After three washings and hard scrubbings with bleach, it started to fade but is still noticable. I attached a picture but you can barely see it. I think what happened is that I didn't move quick enough with my FMQ and the stitches got squished and caught the graphite tightly inside them. First effort, oh well. So, I will quilt some decorative vine patterns to cover the remaining marks. I should have hand quilted it!!!

It is hard when a product disappoints you and on such a beautiful ribbon embroidery quilt too. Chances are the person you are giving it to will not notice because they will see the love and hard work that you've put into it. Three of the saddest words....could've, would've, should've and I've said them many times myself.
|
I'm so sorry for the difficulty you are having. The quilt is gorgeous though and I'm sure your friend will love it anyway. I'll bet that the graphite will wash out over time.
|
So glad to read this post. I was getting ready to use this pen to mark my quilt.
Your quilt is so beautiful. So sorry you had to go through all this. |
Your ribbon embroidery is so beautiful. Sorry you had problems with the marking pen.
|
Oh my goodness, it is beautiful. And it looks like alot of time and work.
|
Your quilt is so pretty....it sure looks like you can work magic with your sticthes and ribbon. Good luck wit your cover up.
|
Your quilt is beautiful, I sure will not use this pencil.

I had the same trouble with a blue chalk pencil on a white queen size quilt made for my best friend of 30+ years. I finished up the binding in our RV on our way to Michigan to gift it to her and was mortified when it wouldn't come out. If I were you, I would keep working it a few more times, just don't dry it. I was finally able to remove the last of the markings with a paste of spray oxy + oxy powder and got under the stitching a little with a toothbrush. I also let it sit for several hours each time. I think it finally took 5-6 washings, air drying in between. Best of luck, it looks beautiful anyway!

Your ribbon embroidery is beautiful!

Beautiful hand embroidery, it sucks when marks won't disappear. Words of wisdom, always test on scraps before the real quilt is done. Everyone has to learn the hard way, you are not the first and will not be the last.
|
It is beautiful.. Is it a matzoh cover? I can't see the problem, but I would try the Oxyclean.. I find it amazing..

I would contact the manufacturer and see if they can help. Worth a try . LOL Karen
|
Your quilt is beautiful. Just remember, anyone else will be looking at it and admiring it on the aristry and beauty as a whole not just where the marks are.
|
It is absolutely gorgeous, your work is wonderful, you are so talented. I was so busy looking at the work I did not see any marks.
|
which washable graphite pencil did you use. I guess it was mentioned in your previous post but would be good to know now.
|
Have you tried Mr. Clean Magic Eraser? It works great on regular pencil, but I haven't tried it on graphite.
Do a test swatch first and see how it works. |
Such gorgeous ribbon embroidery! What marks? I only see beauty.
|
I think it is stunningly beautiful! Your detail is fabulous. Now I HAVE to try the ribbon....

The pen I used was the Fons and Porter washable graphite pen.
Time to get scientific. I have plenty of fabric so I'll make a new sandwich, mark it up and do FMQ on it as before. When I am finished, I will cut the sandwich into a number of pieces and test the following Agent Oxyclean Soak in Oxyclean and cold water TideTo Go Mr Clean Magic Eraser Marking pencil Removal Restoration Milk White Eraser Clorax Stain Buster and Color Booster Rubbing Alcohol/DW soap/water 6 TBSP isopropyl alcohol + 2 TBSP water + 2-3 drops liquid DW soap Synthrapol H2O2 plus Dawn 2 parts hydrogen peroxide to 1 part Dawn. Use soft toothbrush Will post the results so we can all learn something (hopefully). yesterday, I bought all the ingredients, Oxyclean, Tide to Go, Clorox, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, etc. The cashier asked me if I was doing some serious laundry!! |
Any chance a beautiful color of the permenent pen inks could be incorporated as vines amongst your beautiful work?
|
Beautiful work. Shame you had the problems
|
Oh, what a gorgeous quilt! Thanks for warning us about the pencil. I'm sure the marks look bad to you, but I couldn't see them on the picture. All that special ribbon embroidery is what catches the eye. What a special, talented friend you are to make such a lovely gift. Bless you.
|
I also do Ribbon Embroidery so I know all the work and time you put into your beautiful quilt. The graphite does not show up in the pictures so with the vines you mentioned it may not show at all. Be careful not to was too much because of the ribbon embroidery it is so delicate & ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!
|
I would just finish it and call it done. The few marks that remain are probably only visable to you, because you know where they are.
It's a beautiful piece...just as it is!

That quilt is absolutely gorgeous!! Beautiful work!! I am too busy admiring the stitching to pay attention to the marks.

I agree that your embroidery is just beautiful. I have found that sometimes just dampening the fabric and let it dry in the sun for a few hours can really help fade stains. I don't think this short amount of time would affect the embroidery. It's worth a try.
|
I am so sorry that this has happened to you. I would simply give the person the gift, they probably won't even notice a thing. You did such a fantastic job, makes me wonder how anyone would notice!

What a beautiful quilt that will be.

Try hairspray. I spray and rub it into ink marks and then wash it. Always comes right out.

Boy you have a lot of experimenting to do. Are you starting to feel like a mad scientist? This is such a drag that the faint lines have remained. I'm sure your bound to fix it. You know we don't see many ribbon embroidered quilts on this sight would it be possible for you to post a picture of the whole quilt? It looks so beautiful.

This is really beautiful and will certainly look great on your Passover Table.:)
