Washing antique feed/flour sacks?????
 

Hey everybody! I am sure this has been discussed somewhere on here before? I was blessed to be able to get a large lot of antique feed/flour sacks in various colors at an auction this past weekend. I definitely think they are from the 40s due to the prints. You can see where the thread had been picked out of the side, but, they are in great shape other than needing freshening up. Anyone mind sharing techniques, products, or ideas with me? Thank you!

Have only just learnt about these (live in UK) so would love to see photos of your cache of goodies.

a soak in oxyclean- with some gentle aggitation- rinse & hang to dry should do the trick- you can make an oxy paste and work into any (stubborn) stains they wash up like muslin most of the time- becoming softer & softer with each wash.

I too would love to picks of this. My DH has a thing for the 30's-50's fabrics so he has aided me in my collection of these fabrics. he's a keeper! :)

A total of 10 flour/feed sacks. I have a duplicate of one of the purple prints. The each measure roughly a yard. Enjoy!

I'm not much help with how to clean them, but wanted to say you have some very nice prints! I just love feed sacks!

wash them like you would any cotton. They are most color fast and last and last and last. I would use mild detergent and warm water I have some old quilts that have been used and washed many times and they are still bright in color.

Oh, they're BEAUTIFUL - and look like they will play well with each other!

I may be a little late with this, but be cautious about using Oxyclean on vintage fabrics that have blue in them. I had a cute little tablecloth/napkin set I was trying to get stains out of where the blue ran, turned those original spots green, and left the whole mess with a blue cast. I've only had this problem with the blue color!
