i wash them to remove quilting lines, cat hairs etc. i don't use fabric softener however because of chemical allergies unless it is the "green" variety. 7th generation makes one i can use for most of my allergic friends.

One quarter of the recommended dose of washing power, two tablespoons bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), then fill the softener dispenser with cheap white vinegar. Works a treat, makes the washing powder go further and doesn't clog up your machine like softener or too much soap.

I always wash mine and use fabric softener - I LOVE to see them FLUFF UP!!!
