IRONING large yardages...and before you say anything..YES, I wash all fabrics that come into my house...I am avid about this due to the chemicals that are on the fabric!

having said that, when I have lots of fabric to wash, it means I have lots of yardage to iron...here is how I handle that! OH, I line dry to avoid those deep set in wrinkles the dryer can cause and the thread twisting/knots!

After I wash it, then just fold and set aside..I then take like colors, dampen them and put into a large ziploc bag (one of the super jumbo size) and place in the fridge over night...the threads will swell when wet and release the wrinkles, so I can press much easier!

I learned this from ironing the old military uniforms that were cotton...learned it from my mom who did my dads uniforms for 23 years....

my mom in law did that, too. i never had the room in the fridge. LOL

jaciqltznok 03-26-2011 05:47 PM

with the kids gone it is easier...I remember my dad asking my mom once when we were going to actually have veggies in the bin in the fridge, she calmly replied, I suppose when you retire!

Thanks. very good to know.

That's how my mom always did her ironing. I'm going to try that too.

Oh thank you!!!!!! That's a great idea. Off to bookmark it :)
My Mom used one of those bottles with the sprinkler top and rolled up all the clothes. Nice memory :)
Haven't seen her do that in a long time lol

I have two of those still.....with the cork...won't fit in a plastic water bottle..I tried...might have to buy an old soda bottle to store them in for memories sake...I loved watching my granny iron with the soda sprinkler!

I remember my mom had a little white whale like Moby DIck and I just had to be the one to sprinkle the water and roll the clothes. OMG that was years and years ago. Love those memories.

Thanks for the tip on the big wrinkles, I try to pull yardage out of the dryer a couple of times and fluff around so it dosen't get all bunched up in the same spot. And still get'em.

Thanks for that memory. I lost my mom when I was 12 so not a whole lot of memories of her since she worked full time 2nd shift but I do remember the coke bottle with the holes on top and her rolling the clothes. she would let me help iron Dad's hankies when I was around 8, before he passed away. Memories are great, thanks for reminding me of a simpler time ...

Well just don't do what I did and will never do again. I'm getting all my fabric organized and found a bolt of Kona 108" wide that hadn't been washed. You guessed it! 15 yds of 108" went into washer. Well what came out of the dryer is an ever loving MESS! Can't even talk myself into trying to tackle the mound of material that's there. Its still sitting on LR couch where I placed a few days ago!

I think it'll wait until I can put it on the clothes line the full length and then try to tackle the folding of it that way. OMG will NEVER do again.

I do the water sprinkle/roll for my linen napkins that come out once a year(Thanksgiving). Hadn't tried the frig thing, will have to give that a try. Thanks for the hint.

oh my gosh.....I would have cut it into king or queen size backing size pieces and done them separately....you will need a wheelbarrow to get it out to the line....good luck...wish I could come help...

For those of us that remember the old bottle with sprinkle top, clothes rolled and placed in fridge and then ironed the next day, boy are we dating ourselves.
Does anyone remember the metal stretch stays that were placed inside dads pants to keep the crease in them?
Boy where has the time flown too?
oh the good old days.

My mom still has a pair in her laundry room and you can still buy them at the Vermont Country Store.
