Here is dumb question #2001 (or more)......I have finished a quilt which is to be a wedding gift. Am I supposed to wash it before I give it?
i do!!! lol! but use something like baby detergent just to be safe! you never know someones allergies! and to make sure it all stays together if not you have time to fix it without any embarrassments!
Thanks, dear friends. I was thinking that was the thing to do but wasn't sure. and those color catchers are wonderful things, aren't they? I'll post pics when it's all done.

I only wash mine in a front loader machine. I usually use something like Woolite or Quiltsoap.
I wash all my quilts before they go out the door. Unless they are a wall hanging. I throw them in my front loader and (gasp) I use a very small amount of Tide and some Downey. I figure that whoever I give the quilt to will wash it "normally" too. I toss them in my front loader dryer at a lower setting and when done I spread them across a chair to make they are fully dry before going to their new home. Most of the time I throw in a color catcher as well.

If it's a wall quilt, it's not such a big deal, but if they are going to be handling it at all or sleeping under it, you will want to wash it.
and if it is very special, don't agitate it but a couple of minutes. soaking will do the job, then spin out and refill with rinse water, agitate a bit and spin out and you're done. then dry in dryer a bit and lay out flat or hang if necessary.

I generally don't wash quilts before I give them unless the cat rolled on it. I toss them in the dryer with a damp large towel and a dryer sheet. That takes any threads off, refreshes the quilts, and leaves it nice and crisp.
As soon as the last stitch goes in, I wash all my quilts. In a top loader, in cold water, and dry on low.
I always wash my quilts before giving them away. I love the way they look and feel after washing. I use detergent that is non scented and has no dyes, just in case someone is allergic.
what is a color catcher and where do I get one?
I always wash my fabrics before cutting them.
By the time the quilt is finished, it will have been handled a lot. And my cat "assists" me. I wash mine in a top loader (it's a decent sized one) washing machine on a SHORT gentle cycle with lots of water and a small amount of Shaklee detergent or Dreft. Sometimes I'll rinse it twice. Then dry on a gentle or permanent press cycle until BARELY dry. If it's a really large quilt, I'll take it to the laundromat where they have the BIG machines. But I make what I call "utility" quilts - I expect them to get used a lot. |
You find Color Catchers in the detergent section of the store, near where you find the dryer sheets and the pre-treats. They're great. I use them all the time for all my laundry.
you can also get catchers at Joanns

Thanks for the info. I just made a quilt that I will enter at the fair, and didn't know if I should wash it first.
