If it's an individual block or small piece that is dirty, those can be washed in a small container, or even the bathtub. You just soak and hand-agitate or rub at the stains as needed. The fabric edges shouldn't unravel much, if at all, that way. Ask me how I know. ;)

I have a bunch of old quilt blocks and I will not try to wash them until they are assembled into a quilt and quilted so they won't ravel or become wampyjawed.

I agree. You definitely need to stabilize the tops before washing. I'd quilt them just to be safe.
