I went to Walmart to pick up some backing fabric. Bolt said it was 10 yards. Came home and measured it. It was 9.58 yard. NOT 10
Yesterday i saw some more bolt fabric.Took off paper surrounding it made clerk measure the bolt. 9.58 yd. Instead of the 10 yd.it said was on the bolt. If i was a shop owner i would check some of my new bolts that come it. It may happen to you too. Something to think about.

I suppose they'd have to put a disclaimer on the 'full' bolts to say rounded to the nearest full yard.

Bolts that are machine wound often stretch the fabric a bit, in keeping a good, taut tension. This could account for the discrepancy.

I used to buy lycra spandex stretch nylon fabric for my swimsuit business, and the difference between what the machine bolter measured and what I measured when I got it was way more than with a woven!

That's awful! Did they compensate you??

It not unusal to have a un-opened bolt not measure what the bolt end says.
It one of the issues fabric stores have with inventory shrinkage before the bolt is even started.

There was a piece on NPR this morning describing how "box" stores often insist that suppliers dilute or otherwise downgrade products sold in their stores.

That's the way they come from the manufacturer. When I worked at JoAnn's, corporate directions were to measure every bolt, no matter what it said on the end. Exceptions were batting - don't know why - and special orders as the special order department measured those.

The store has nothing to do with it unless they are cutting and rewrapping large bolts into smaller ones. I'd rather have a slightly short, machine wrapped bolt to work from than one that some clerk has unrolled, measured and then tried to rewrap smoothly. Just my personal preference.
