I am trying to find a source for water soluble thread. Our local stores don't have it.

mtnmama 02-20-2010 07:50 AM

What do you use it for? Basting a quilt before the quilting begins?

Try here

I could not find any locally either. I found it on line at these sites:
http://www.joggles.com/store/catalog...18&src=froogle

http://www.byannie.com/water_soluble_threads.html

http://www.thefind.com/crafts/info-water-soluble-thread

There are more sites, just depends who you like to do business with and shipping costs always play into it with me. Good luck and enjoy!

Good question. I learned to use it from one of our members who uses it to fold under her applique edges. She had absolutely beautiful applique. That is what I am using it for right now, but would love more ideas.

I use it to baste smaller pieces of water soluble stabilizer together to fit my large hoop on my embroidery machine.

It's great for basting....'cause then you don't have to take it out..just wash your item.

I am doing some trapunto and need it for the first stitching. I can do it without but then I would have two rows of stitching. I guess they didn't have it in the old days did they?

cuppi duke 02-20-2010 08:38 AM

Thanks, I'll try it.

cuppi duke 02-20-2010 08:39 AM

Thank you, that was a great help

cuppi duke 02-20-2010 08:39 AM

I never thought of using it for that.

cuppi duke 02-20-2010 08:40 AM

Good idea.

Quiltsbybarb 02-20-2010 08:44 AM

That is what I use it for, too.

If you can find it, I find that Superior brand is a little heavier and doesn't break as easy. Also, remember you can't lick the end of the thread to thread your needle!

You can get some online at Red Rock Threads. I just bought some, but have not used it yet. Their prices are very reasonable and do reduce the shipping if you are only ordering 1-2 spools. Shipping is quick too.

My early experience (and lesson) with this thread: DON'T lick it before threading the needle. lol

I used it for trapunto once.

I never thought to use it for basting. Is is difficult to wind onto a bobbin like the invisible thread? I sure like the sound of not having to pin, pin, pin.

It feels just like regular thread, until it gets wet.

JanetM 02-20-2010 01:24 PM

Great time saver. Thank you so much for this tip.

sewfunquilts 02-21-2010 07:21 AM

No. it's not difficult to wind on a bobbin. Just go make sure it winds evenly, and not real tight. You can use it in hand needles to baste quilts together too....if you want longer stitches than by your sewing machine.

Very handy and useful product.

On one of the quilt shows the Superior thread guy told the story about his son, who is a pretty good sewer, resewed his friend's swim trunks using this thread. He said do not use it to sew bathing suits. LOL

Rose Marie 02-21-2010 07:42 AM

The Viking shop inside Joanns carrys it.

sewfunquilts 02-21-2010 07:46 AM

Oh...that's SEW funny about the swim suit repair....LOL!
