Which way do Christmas stockings go?

I feel really stupid asking this question. Which way are Christmas stockings supposed to go? Does the toe point to the left or the right? I'm making some for a fair I'm in and realized that they go both ways, not sure if this is right. Some of the fabric I bought was kind of pricey and I want to use it only on the front of the stockings. Help?

I usually have my toes pointing to the left - as if they were going forward

I do them both ways when I did craft shows. When I dids mine for mantel I did 2 left 2 right. There really is no special way!

I have no idea for the reason but I always hang mine toes pointing to the left.

Mine go both ways. J J

I would make them both ways to surround my fireplace.

Toes pointing left seems natural to me.

I don't think there is a right or wrong direction and I, also, don't think it's a stupid question. My family's stockings go
both ways. I made some and purchased others. I really had never given it any thought before your post. I'm getting ready to order some from a catalog and they all point to the right.

Why not put designs on both sides and it won't matter.

How do you figure? depends what direction you are going.

wanda lou 11-08-2011 11:41 AM

I agree there is no right or wrong way.

TexasGurl 11-08-2011 11:59 AM

Don't think it matters ! I've seen them face left or right, sometimes towards each other too

nea 11-08-2011 12:13 PM

I don't think it matters much. Have made them both ways. As long as they aren't empty on Christmas morning the recipients won't care either

Whichever way your heart desires! Pay no attention to "stocking police" ... lol.

My first reaction was -
foot down - top up -
and then I read the rest of the question -

Perhaps you can find a coordinating fabric for the "other side" - and then either side would be "special"

LOL. That's what I was thinking too! hahaaaa. This really has me giggling.

I don't think it matters, but when I made 22 "Cowboy Boot" stockings a few years back they were all facing left.

LivelyLady 11-12-2011 07:21 PM

Hmmm..that's something I have never given a thought, but for some reason I hang mine with toes pointing left, but feet can go in any direction. If in doubt that I think romanojg has the solution of putting designs on both sides.

Are you kidding? All that extra work (there's a chuckle here :-)) Mine favor the left, but what the heck, as long as Santa fills them to the brim!!!!!! Either way I'm sure is OK.

I don't think it really matters, BUT I like mine pointing left
