We quilters should know better

My DD is a quilter, she works full time has 2 small children and is pregnant. A co-worker who is also a quilter wanted to make a wallhanging for a teacher that was retiring. She called my DD and asked her for ideas and then said she didn't know how to piece the school letters, so why don't you do it and I will pay you...did not set a price.

DD designed the wallhanging and drove 45min to my house to machine quilt it...bound and hand stitched the binding. I asked her how much did you get...she said $40.00...

I can see how a non quilter would do that but someone who knows what it takes to make . I know, I know...always set a price no matter who it is. If you know ahead then it up to you to do it or not..

I would hope that the person gave your DD credit for the design and work she did on it and not claim it as her own. Yes, she should have set a price up front, but as you say, you would have thought the co-worker would have offered a fairer fee for all the work your DD did.

I should imagine that many of use have done work for other quilters or friends and charged a pittance for the work. Personnally I have done that with friends who have difficulty making bags.

Was it a joint gift or from both of them? Perhaps she thought the $40. was her share? It almost seems as though she wanted the praise without doing the actual work if she did not, at the very least, give credit to your daughter for her time and effort.

At that price it should have been considered a gift from both of them!

Also, you daughter might need to learn how to say 'no'.

People have no idea as to what goes into making a quilt, let alone designing a quilt. We tend to undercharge all the time. I don't think "we" will ever learn to say no, especially to friends.

That's part of what makes us quilters!

Did the co-worker/quilter help with it at all then give your daughter the $40? Or did DD do it all?

I agree with Dotty. I have done things for friends and don't charge anything.

It was a gift of the co-worker for her friend, who was retiring. She did get her 2yds of fabric and DD got some batting from my roll. I think that one thing is to offer to do something for someone and it is another to be asked to do it.
