My future daughter-in-law asked me to do a signature quilt in place of their guest book at their wedding. She's decided not to have the quilt top made in advance just in case there are signatures or squares she doesn't want in the quilt. This decision came about because of a young child who drew all over the signature frame at my daughter's wedding reception and pretty much ruined it. We're using this picture that we found on the internet as our planned pattern. She's using the colors of her wedding platinum gray, burnt orange and a lighter gray. The signatures will be put on a tone on tone off-white fabric. She's having some cardboard frames made so that we can try to make sure we have a good seam allowance. Write down all these wonderful ideas you are coming up with, sleep on it for a couple nights. then go for it. That way you won't come back later with a bunch of "what if's"

make 4 1/2" squares and have people sign them with a fabric pin and then sew them into a quilt top, I did this for a wedding and used white/white, white in cream fabric and set it into a queen size quilt.. they loved it...

And press under your seam allowance for safety - ask me how I know?

So, with your suggestion, I will have 6" squares, allowing for 1/4"-1/2" seam allowance, I should cut the freezer paper to 5-5.5", press it to the center of the square, and then press the seam allowance under. Is this what you were suggesting?

I have recently completed two signature quilts.

After trying many pens, the best I have found are the Pentel Roller Gel pens for fabric. They are not super fine, so they do not 'snag' as you try to write and the writing isn't so fine it is difficult to read. Also, being a gel roller, once the fabric is stablized with freezer paper they write just like a normal pen. Wonderful. Set with a warm iron and there is no fading when washed. Three colors red, blue and black. Oh, and we didn't have any issues with bleeding or smearing. (no connection, just personal experience)

How long did you wait from the time you wrote on the fabric to the time you washed it?
Did subsequent washings hold up well?
