I think whatever you want to make is fine. I just made one called altered squares for my nephew and wife to be.

Nice colors. I just finished two of this pattern one was square and the other rectangular.

You can make any pattern you want. I try to find out the couples colors and style preferences so that I am sure the quilt will appeal to their individual tastes. Other than that, anything goes.
